What purpose does the oval opening under the air box serve? I was thinking of opening it up to make a true cold air intake by taking a 90* elbow from a semi exhaust and taking it from the MAF through the opening (after I alter it) to expose the filter to colder air. It would be just like I had on my Grand Prix, only I was using a 4" pipe then;). Pics on page 6 of my website.

I've heard it's not good to put bends between the MAF meter and the filter because it can cause the air to swirl and give bad readings. But who knows.

I have heard those arguments from both the Ford world and GM world. At least from the GM world I know that is not true. We made an intake that was straight and one with a 90* bend and there was no difference to the MAF readings or flow readings. I just didn't want to block anything important.

I would kinda agree, I have a bend right after my MAF going down under the car and my car will buck from time to time. Its not the coils or anything because if I put my stock airbox back in the car drives fine.

I have a fenderwell CAI on my Mustang that was a 90* elbow from the MAF to the fender that replaced my stock air box and I have never had a problem with it. I have had it for 3 years now.

I too have been considering something similar to this. Take a look at this thread for more information:

Let us know if you get it finished. Pictures are great.
