First of Happy Holidays to all my LVC family,

I really want to thank you for all the advise and education you provided of the last couple of months. I really had given on my 2004 Lincoln LS and was about to call it quits after it started having so many issues. I had to have it towed 2 hours away to Jacksonville, FL to have some mechanics who knew what they were doing with it to work on it. They addressed many of the issues and I very fortunate to have the car working to where I could drive it back home 2 hours away.

The only thing I was told that really reminded was air coming into the engine due to needing a new intake manifold. Of coarse the price for new was $2700 and not sure if I want to trust investing in an older one.

Lately I have been wonder if its worth keeping the LS. At 150,000 miles this has been the only major issue besides replacing original factory parts. What do you think? Any suggestions on the intake manifold and ways to obtain a new one?

A new intake manifold that is not a common break part for the ls. Did they tell you why you need one you can buy one used its a pretty reliable part for the ls and almost never needs to be replaced

Intake manifold failure is rare. I would think that a used intake would be a pretty safe bet.

Why do you need a new one? Cracked or what? V6 or V8?

I have a V-8 Lincoln LS. I was told there is air leaking into the intake and it needs to be replaced. the first one was cracked and needed to be replaced a few months back. I had someone installed another one that was used. I recently was told it is still leaking air. @joegr, I will try my best to keep things consistent....is cover not the right terminology, please provide me with the right name. Does anyone know a good mechanic besides dealership that works on Lincoln LS in Tallahassee??????

The right name is "intake manifold."
This is the intake manifold. This is what you are talking about?

This is the cover. It's only functions are cosmetic and noise reduction. The engine runs just fine without it.

Excellent Breakdown....Definitely talking about the intake manifold. I had the original replaced in August 2013 because I was told it was cracked. They put on a used one. Took to a dealer in Jacksonville b/c of codes P0171 and P0174 and was told still leaking air. Can't find a mechanic in Tallahassee that knows how to fix handle Lincoln LS besides the dealership.

Did they say that the intake manifold was leaking, or could this be a non-related leak?

No sir. They just said too much air was coming into the engine through the manifold and that is why the car is shaking and has hesitation.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

I'm torn on any advice I can give you. If it were me I would read up on the job and tackle it myself. From your posts I it sounds like you don't have the skills or confidence to tackle a job like this. I like to have a broken part in hand before ordering a new one. Per your air intake leak I would like to know where it's leaking and why.

Did you see the cracks on your old intake once it was removed?

Yes, I wish I had the time, knowledge and tools to tackle the job myself but my schedule is hectic doing work in the community with youth and going to school myself. I had the bad belief of trusting these mechanics were doing what I paid them to do but now I'm pretty much short of being an A**hole and want to see the parts and the watch the work being done so I don't keep going through these issues. LVC has been a real help in understanding whats going on with the Lincoln LS before and after it is worked on.

I recently started getting check engine light with codes P2197. I did some research and found that could be caused by leaks on both sides of the engine. Am I right in assuming this has alot to do with the replacing the intake manifold as stated in this threat??? I am trying to save up the money for this major job...Am I doing serious damage to the car driving it in the mean time???

Anytime you bring a car into a shop for repair and the say it needs a new "whatever" ... ALWAYS insist on them leaving your old parts in the trunk.
As you buy a new part, they say needs replacement, the old broken part is still yours unless it's a part with a core charge.

ALWAYS insists on having your old parts returned to you. Shops make over 200% markup costs on parts and will gladly replace parts on cars that don't actually need new parts, then keep your old part, clean it up and sell it to the next guy as a brand new part. Happens everyday!

In not so many words, shady shops will tell you it needs this and that at a cost of over 1000$ in parts alone before the either hook a little vacuum hose back up or replace clip that holds hose in place. A two minute, two dollar part is a huge earning potential when they can sell several expensive parts before they actually fix the main root/cause of the problem.

Trust me, happens everyday all day long!

Thanks BigRigLS. Will definitely note this for the future. Any info on check engine light with codes P2197. I did some research and found that could be caused by leaks on both sides of the engine.
