If I swap the 1st gen for the second gen will the miles on my car stay or is the unit itself in the cluster? I'm covered for another 30k miles on my warranty and don't want to screw myself out of coverage with wrong mileage reading

you have to have the cluster "married" to the computer, no info is stored on the cluster it is just a means of displaying the info, but an ordained lincoln tech has to marry them unless you have to have the cumputer "tools" to do it at home

sweet thanks for the info...Is the first gen as much of a PITA to take out as the 2nd and an tips...

Thanks again for your help.

Do you have a first gen Ls and have plans of swapping a 2nd gen cluster into that? Someone chime in if I'm wrong but I am pretty certain I read on this forum somewhere that this cannot be done! If it could be I would be all over this swap:)

I think you can switch out the gauge faces im not sure about the rest, if you can it will still need to be married, but check out de-markos dash removal thread he has pics of the gauges coming out afaik

I just swapped mine, and yes it has to be done by the dealer unless you have your own new generation star tool,

it will also display the mileage of whatever the cluster had on it before you put it in.

gen1 isn't that bad, just put the wheel all the way down and it's like 8 bolts, I think 8mm

hummm this may be a better idea, would I be able to swap the 1gen with 2 gen white face over lays?

It's a better idea in that it can be done, but swapping the whole 1st gen cluster for a 2nd gen cluster can not be done. The electronics are not compatible.

Yeah I didn't think it could be done, but knew if it could be there wouold be some complications.

Can you order just the gauge face or do you have to find a whole cluster.
