how hard is it to switch out steering wheels? im wanting the woodgrain, i have an all leather one now. i was just wondering how much work is involved

Very easy, disconnect the battery, remove the airbag, remove the bottons, remove the center nut and you are gonna need a stearing wheel removing tool from your local autozone and you are done.

what color wheel do you have?
I have woodgrain with black/very dark gray interior I would rather have non woodgrain

Anybody else wanting to switch there woodgrain seering wheel for a non wood grain steering wheel. I have the tan interior and its a 2000 LS. Or if anybody has one that they want to sell? I also have a black LSE grille if any body wants an all black grille that can trade me there 2003+ chrome surround for the painted black one and some extra $$$ let me know.

I agree. My dad and I fabricate right hand drive conversions for postal mail carriers. Usually do 2 to 4 a month. Most ppl are afraid of the air bag blowing up in their face, but they are very durable. Never had one do it yet and we've done well over a hundred of them. Definitely get the steering wheel removing tool. You can pick them up pretty cheap at places like harbor freight and tool if you have one of those close by. Just looked up one on line at advance auto parts and it listed for $38. However the steering wheel can be removed with applying pressure to the bottom of the steering wheel with your knees and hitting the back side on the top of the steering wheel. May take a few GOOD hits. Wouldn't advise this though because you can ruin the teeth on the steering wheel where it connects to the column. Then you've just screwed the steering wheel all together...oh and don't turn your key back on while your airbag is disconnected. It will throw the airbag light, and you'll have to take it to the dealer or someplace else and have it reset.

Just make sure you let the car sit for at least 10 minutes...preferrably 30 minutes...after you disconnect the battery. Air bags can deploy without battery power if you don't let the car sit first.

Lincoln used different shades of gray over the years. They look very similar, but they may not be the same. I bought a wheel that I would have sworn was the right color. It wasn't. To make sure you have the right color, match up your interior codes.

Anybody interested in a leather wrapped steering wheel NO WOOD. Tan in colour and its in A1 condition. I also have a NON-SST shifter assembly with leather wrapped shifter knob. The visable plastic has no scratches and the knob is like new. Both items are from a 2000 LS.

how does the steering wheel center cover come off and is it possible to remove the airbag completely and use it as a easy access empty space

Refer to post #8. There is a bolt, both sides of the steering wheel, on the back side of the wheel. See page 2 of the PDF Ken provided.

You could leave it off, I suppose. But you'd have to fab something up to cover it back up, not to mention, and god forbid it happen, if you get into an accident, the first thing you'll most likely see is the hugh center nut holding the steering on. Ouch!!!
