Steering noise?

so over the weekend my steering started developing a noise, sounds alot like bad bushing noise.

Almost nails-on-chalkboard noise.

over bumps, when steering (especially when stopped), etc.

Pretty much whenever the rack moves, I hear the sound.

Any ideas?
 
Havent been able to check the rack itself, but the reservoir is showing between min-max.

I wonder if this could be caused by Mike Bass Ford using power steering fluid, as opposed to the recommended ATF.

I doubt it. There's not really a big difference between the two. Any issues would probably take several thousand miles to show up.
 
Its been over 30K since the new motor went in (last October).

But it isn't the rack....

Awhile back I had Euromarque joints pressed in at a local shop...

I have a bunch of play on that same drivers lower joint.

And the noise is getting ridiculously loud, but as soon as I lift the car up, there's no noise.

it sounds like metal on metal screeching.

Now I have to dig up that shops phone number and get them to honor their "we'll replace the control arm" promise.

I had a sebring back a while ago. It made an a noise exactly as what you are stating. It turned out it was a dry bad ball joint. The ball joints had no grease fittings. What I did to fix this was not a good idea but it did work for almost a year. I made a very small hole in the rubber, enough to shove a straw in on a can of wd-40. I filled up the ball joint with wd-40 till it started coming out of the hole. I turned the wheel a few times to get the wd-40 in and the sound stopped. This was on a lower ball joint. It is very crude, but I had changed out my power steering pump and the tie rod ends. I was fed up with it and wanted to do anything to make it stop.

The boot is torn on the joint, otherwise I would do this... But i'm afraid the control arm needs replaced as well (like I said, there is alot of play).

Not too big a deal, Euromarque is shipping me a new joint Priority USPS free of charge after I spoke with Ed for over an hour trying to diagnose the issue.

I would definitely recommend them if you cannot afford the Moogs though, if not for the quality, then for the great customer service.
 
You can still hit it with the wd-40 even if its just a temporary fix till your new one comes in.
 
If there wasnt a bunch of snow on the ground I would actually pump some grease into the zerk fitting. I hit it with WD40 and it has quieted down, but is still making the typical clunk noise.

Im going to the shop in the AM to have them look at it.
 
2000 sport. You live in Strongsville. Is that the Strongsville in the Cleveland area?
 
Yes... in Parma now, but I was in strongsville, OH about 10 miles outside of cleveland.
 
well, sprayed the joint with WD40, which was pretty easy since the boot was torn.

Noise pretty much gone, but the joint is getting looser.

can still feel/hear the clunk over bumps and while steering.

Its going into the shop tomorrow morning. so update then.
 
Took it in this morning to have to control arm looked at...

Turns out, the arm is fine but the joint is toast.

it was probably damaged when the nut broke loose back in february.

Unfortunately, the vibrations from the bad joint has killed the wheel bearing as well.

so there is some play on the joint, and also in the hub.

Just checked with Autozone, and I bought the hub January 6th, so the 1 year warranty has 2 weeks or so left on it.
 
yup... I told the shop I wasnt going to let them do it all for free, and offered to pay the same as before, 75 to press in the joint and install the new hub.

They have done more than I would've expected any shop to cover, so it's the least I could do.

They guy has 4 other LS's and 2 Jag S-Types either in the shop or in the lot, as well as several BMW's and older Porsche's.

It's about the only shop in my area I can actually trust :)
