I may have gone completely crazy, but I swear I can feel the car shifting gears in 4th and in 5th... without me shifting the gears...

Am I crazy, or is the transmission actually doing something?

I think I know what you are talking about I have notice what seems like it shifting between 4th and 5th when in sst but I figured I was just imagining it

I usually call it Select Shift, but someone told me recently its called Tiptronic on the Lincolns... maybe he was wrong.

I use it, because the transmission seems so confused on what to do at times. With SST I can (somewhat) control when it shifts.... also it prevents unecessary shifting at low speeds.

When in SST mode the ONLY gear available is the gear selected. The trans will neither up- nor downshift; unless you come to a complete stop.

Correct, but the torque converter will still lock and unlock when the PCM thinks that it should.

torque converter i think. if i'm driving along in the LS, and tap the brake while on the gas, the RPM will jump as the TC unlocks, and then drop again as it re-locks.

+30 on TC locking/unlocking. But it looks as though that's pretty clear now lol.

I always assumed cars only locked the converter on the highway, and even then only in the final gear. But I suppose it makes sense. It feels like a gear shift.

No, not at all. We're fighting for every possible MPG. Torque converter lock can now be almost any gear and almost any speed.

Many moons ago, or in hot rod adaptations, yes. In modern cars, it'll lock any time the PCM can get away with it.

The car I owned before my Navigator was an 89 Town Car... Converter did not lock. Before that '99 Mazda 626, and before that a '92 Stanza... neither of which had locking converters. So this is pretty new to me... My Navigator transmission is so smooth, its often hard to tell when its shifting without watching the tach. Also it has 6 gears, which they claim improves ride quality. (though I know its actually for fuel milage)

Just to beat this horse a little deader: I've felt it too. Most certainly agree with it being TC locking and unlocking.

I hate it.

It feels like it bogs the car down way too much. People who ride with me think something is wrong when they feel it lock/unlock.

I actually use the SST now to make the car shift smoother. If I catch it right, I can make the transmission shift better than it normally does on its own. Its the rough 1-2 shift and ridiculous brief power loss 2-3 shift which drives me crazy.
