i just bought a 94 mark viii .the speedometer and odometer and trip meter work sometimes.an off and on problem.can someone please give me some pointers on repairing the problem.thanks,joe

I would take it to autzone, or someone you know and see if there are any codes in the pcm. It could be an eletrical supply problem or it could be the vss on the side of the rear trans housing.

if autozone knows how to pull codes from an obd1 system id be amazed. half the time they :q:q:q:q up pulling codes from an obd2.
its the speed sensor.

I agree, sounds like a faulty VSS
Short of replacing it, you could try:
Pulling the VSS and inspect the plastic drive gear for missing teeth
Check the connection to VSS and clean if needed.
Verify continuity of the circuit by testing at the cluster harness as well.

Most likely your problem is that the glue has given away on both your speedo and the gauge face is actually in contact with the needles and not allowing them to move what so ever. What you will hafta do to correct this (IF this is what the problem actually is.....) is to remove the gauge cluster then either try to reglue the gauge faces back down without removing the needles, or to remove the needles and go that route.
Now as far as the odometer and such not working that could be as simple as a connection, could be a problem with the computer, or could be a problem with the wiring with the transmission. The wiring with the transmission was what my problem was just recently. I installed a new motor/tranny in my car recently and then all of a sudden my speedo/odometer and everything else associated quit working. What it was the electrical connection on the drivers side of the tranny that is connected to the MLPS had frayed and was making contact with ground causing a short not allowing the gauge cluster to work. I would check that to see if you have frayed wires, or if you have some fluids inside the plug causing it to short, or a simply loose connection.

bump.
i was wrong in my last post. changed my sensor and driven gear for the new gears. still got the problem.
what happens is when its cold out or im driving fast enough to keep some wind moving under the car the speedometer works. sit in traffic and it stops working all together. speedo needle doesnt budge. when driving and its kinda warm out you can watch the speedo needle start to jump around and drop off and eventually doesnt read.
the gauge faces are not peeling in any way and are not related to this issue. i have not gone in and diagnosed it properly yet. im just wondering if anyone else has seen this. ill try to take a short video clip of it happening and post it in the next couple days.
when the speedo IS inop the trans still shifts normally and the speed limiter still comes in at the correct time.

That's why it was suggested that the dial face may be just slightly bubbled and catching the needles when there is an ambient temperture fluctuation that causes the glue behind the gages to swell a little.
