I'm running a JVC head unit and the stock amp through stock speakers. I want to up grade the speakers next. What should I use to get the best bass and volume out of the four mains and what should I use in the top of the doors?
Did these cars come with anty kind of sub in them?
I use all the trunk space for luggage and tools- I'm a traveling tech type.
What about crossovers for the new set up?
Got any good advice out there?

Well if you're going stock speakers and amp a crossover isn't really gonna help... the problem is the stock amp already has crossover in place and they're kinda weird... the 5x7's get all the bass and the rest goes to the tweeters... they're pretty decent speakers just can't take much abuse... my advice is if you don't wanna get new amps and everything just add a sub... the trunk in these cars are HUGE!... you should be able to get a nice ten to round out the sound and still have a lot of room... I went with a 12 and I still have enough room for 2 tool boxes and then some.

I have twin 12"s and still have room for my mountain bike!! I agree with Matthew. Adding a 10" sub can really change the system and it would be easy and affordable to do.

Quality 6x8s will help with bass some but will not come close to even a single 10". They make subs specifically designed to work in small enclosures to help you keep the truckspace you'll lose to a minimum.

If you are just swapping speakers go with 6.5" rounds. I have some Infinties in my 94 and it did help some. I'll be putting in a 10" sub system shortly to help improve the system. (not looking to bounce the car just complete the sound).

if its a first gen VIII, the four 6x8 are the subs, if you replace them with aftermarket speakers you will only get bass out of them the best option since you allready have an aftermarket radio, is to put componet 6.5 in the front. a few good quality 6.5's componets(alpine type R's, Pioneer) will come with a 6x8 adapter, then just put the tweeters in the factory 3" location. the trickest part is to run new speaker wire from the radio into the doors so that the speaker system has a full range signal to work with. another option is to get a good quality 3" full range speaker to replace the top speakers, unfortunatly there is not a lot of companies that make a 6x8 or 6x9 bass only speaker, its very easy to replace the radios with this premium sound system but replacing the speakers and still using the fact amp gets a little tricky. same goes for the back speakers the 6x8 is the fact sub and the 3" is the full range so replacing the the 6x8 with an aftermarket 6x8 you wont get any highs from, and replacing the 3" with a high quality speaker wont change how the bass sounds, again i would run new speaker wire from the deck and either replace the 6x8 with full range aftermarket speaker, or trim the hole a little bigger to fit a real nice set of 6x9's in there to get a little more bass if you dont want to run a real subwoofer

Yeah wiring a whole new system does sound a lot better... and these cars are REALLY easy to do it in... bout 6 hours with a buddy and you can get two amps, all new speakers, fresh new wires, and a sub all hooked up... but like I said though if you just wanna make it just sound better just add a sub... that way you can turn the bass down on the speakers so they don't clip and just make the sub do what it's suppose to do... just need an amp and a sub... should take less than an hour if you know what's goin on... and it'll probably give you sound you're lookin for...

about the rounds yeah they sound a little better... I went with 5x7's all around and I'm happy with the sound... I spent about 650... got all new speakers... 5x7 polks audios for the front... 5x7 component infinity kappas for the back... new alpine deck... ppi amp for a 12" JL audio sub... and an alpine amp for the cabin speakers... I just looked on Craigslist and shopped around till I had it all done... I get a lot of compliments on it too...

Just take it slow everyone has different taste in sound... I like it to be full... but it's nice to have that extra umph if need be to show some punks what's goin on when they come by with they're trunks all rattling... other thing I noticed is the insulations pretty good... I can have it loud enough where everything's hurting your ears and the bass is moving your hair and you step out and it's pretty quiet outside... I did add dynomat to the trunk lid to help though...
