I'm hoping to see pictures of everyone elses and the sorce of their airflow. All I want is more airflow and need opinions.

Mine's a KKM intake with the tru rev, but I got an idea from one of the members on here for a true-ER cold air, but not quite. I surrounded the part facing the engine with a heat sheild leaving the bottom open for airflow. It keeps 90% of the hot air out, not quite 100 because I left a gap at the bottom and the top to be sure it didn't smother itself and I think it picks up a little better. I have a black car so that automatically makes it alot hotter under the hood. I know it's not dressy or anything, but I'm not planning on showing it off anytime soon. Give me some feedback

Note that this is just an alternative until I can find some way to make it a REAL cold air. If you let your car run for 10 minutes and stick you hand to feel the heat you know how hot it can get.

I have the same intake as you. I'm considering making a shield out of 16 guage aluminum and doubling it like I did on my MarkVIII, not priority thou on the LSE as the under hood temps don't seem to be as outrageous as on the Mark. I'm actually remaking the one in the Mark.

Do you know the demand for one of those things would be if you actually made them? I'd pay you to make me one when you figure out how to make it! That's awesome! I'm just not good at making stuff out of metal.
 
Oh yeah, I see the open filter design as a little incomplete the be called cold air as people call it. I've looked at it a few times on the LS and have several ideas to do it, and will do it perhaps pretty soon. Just have a lot of stuff going on right now and just cant spend the time on it right now. The one in the Mark you see in the picture has been scrapped to make a cleaner one its almost complete but I have been side tracked on the project lately, all in good time. You know, I am going to be racing the LSE for a little while and its been sitting the garage, switched to driving the Mark daily. I may just look at it closer one of these nights, no promises.
 
As i recall, they guy who built a fiberglass heat shield like what your trying also blew his engine, could be totally unrelated, but then ????. I have created several versions of a "cold air" on my LS. Here is what i have found with my attempts. First off, the LS has a specific directed flow of air in the grill and thru the engine compartment. If you look closely at the plastic housing under the hood and the actual hood you can see how it is directed. Its pretty cool. This is why at driving speed the underhood temps are reduced drastically. Due to the location of the filter outside air should carry this heat away. By creating these "heat shields" you could alter this airflow which will reduce its normal ability to reduce heat, which would be counter productive to what you are wanting. So then the next step would seem to be trying to route a cool source of air. I made both an airtight sealed and a nonairtight intake with tubing and figerglass. I posted pics when i did it. There are two issues with the normal tubing setup. First, i noticed alot more dirt and debris in the filter with this setup, which would eventually lead to decreased airflow and possible contamination unless you cleaned it on a regular basis. Next issue is actually how much air is making it thru the tubing and what kind of pressures its creating. If you have ever noticed, stock cold air intakes are always located up top on the hood. With all this said my car performs better with the stock setup, cutout airbox and k&n panal filter than it did with any of the cold air setups. The stock plastic housing has far superior heat reducing properties than any aluminum or fiberglass or whatever intake that people are making. Keep in mind you are trying to apply basic "hot rod" techniques to a very well engineered car. The gains will be minimal if any.
 
I originally stated the LS is considerably cooler under the hood than most cars. Sealing the filter from the engine bay can only ensure the motor will not pull any air that is warmed by the engine. I can see where relocating it with longer lengths of intake tube could cause the question if its actually making it harder for the motor to breath. I feel its perhaps best left where it is, but I can't be convinced sealing it from the engine warmth is a bad thing. It wont restrict flow to the filter as there is hugh holes in all directions and only a moron would build a box that didn't alow air to the filter. As far as restricting flow to the rest of the engine compartment, maybe, I'd take it into consideration when I look at it next. As far as using aluminum I double wall it so engine side and filter side can be 2 entiely different temps. As far as blowing my engine because of my air intake, thats silly.

I think a decent way to look at extending the intake is to compare it to drinking with a straw. The more straws you add in a single line requires harder suction to drink with. The cars computer is able to compensate for some variables/differences, and messing with the intake does cause "differences". I think its definately a possibility that the compensation that occurs could cause stress or premature wear. Its a stretch, but it is a possiblity where the benefit doesnt seem to outweigh the negative affects, not to mention gas mileage which i am sure everyone is watching nowadays.

This is my first post as I just purchsed a 2004 lincoln LS, I couldn't let the deal go away car has 27,000km (17,000miles) got it for $18,000, I thought it was a good deal, 2 years left on bumper/bumper warranty and I upgraded it untill 2010
Anyways....
I have been following and reading as many posts as possible, came across this one, regarding cold air intakes.
The job that "02LSE96LSC91SE84TC" did on their intake is completely state of the art, very well done, I apreciate to look at well done stuff like that.
However...by closing in the cold air intake with sheet metal or any other material
doesn't it defeat the purpose of having a cold air intake, what I mean is by closing in the cold air intake your basically putting the intake back as stock, often people do that to avoid getting hot air in the intake, but by closing it in your also restricting the amout of air going in the engine.
I've put this to the test with my other car, that's why I'm posting it her
I have a 12s 1996 Eagle Talon, this subject also came through our forum, I decided to be the ginnypig.
I made one to a perfect match from cardboard, installed it around the open air intake, of course this was all done when I was at the dragway, did 3 runs marked down my times, I've notice right away the difference the car felt slugish. Took the box from around the filter, did 3 runs the difference was .2s faster in the 1/4 mile.
Based on that info everyone that was there with me came to the conclusion that the box around the intake it does not help performance, most likely it helps to prevent hot air to get to the engine, but not worth having it.
I'm very sure it's better than the stock one, but not as good as having the intake exposed.
Now, if you can manage a way to get cold ait into the intake from an outside route you might benefit from that.
Just some info I wanted to share, still what he did, was a very clean, professional job, I like seing some that does the job right the first time.
 
That was discussed in detail in another Cold air box thread. The one yod see above is in a MarkVIII which has a very warm engine compartment, the filter still pulls from much larger holes than the stock box had to offer. The extreme air temps from under the hood would make the car feel sluggish in warm weather. I actually argued your point exactly on the other thread as people were reboxing there conical filters. The LS breaths alot better under the hood so its less important then on the MarkVIII, however the design I've been putsing with will only shroud the engine heat and not restict the filter. The LS has many holes to breath the fresh air from in that area, so it shouldn't restrict it at all.
 
your 12s talon was pulling WAY more are than our n/s ls's are pulling.
