Is a coiled wire that runs around the steering shift to carry electrical signals down the column (cruise, radio, air bag...) When it's bad features work intermittently or the airbag light will flash and there will be a chassis code.

thank you why is called a clock spring though, first time i heard someone say it i was like they have an analog clock and it caused all those problems when it quit working. thanks a lot though.

It's wound like a spring, but I'm note sure where the term clock came from.

i ahve another question and im not going to start a thread on it. wher could i purchase a scan tool for the ls thats not going to break my acount, sears has what looks like a nice one but i dont know if it works with our car or not. im just not into spending thousands on a snap on solus or something.

heres the link for the sears one

Depending on what you are looking to use the scanner for you could get a used xcal unit. It will be able to scan and extract CEL OBD II codes for you as well as flash your PCM if you want to get a tune.

Not sure but GM's require a different scanner for chassis codes. Can that scanner pull chassis codes?

I also wonder what it actually was. I do know that the things that start acting crazy when it goes bad, but I had the impression it was an actual spring or something.

The old wind up clocks used springs that looked very much like the inside of the clockspring assembly looks like.
