Had new Shift solenoid installed (275.00 from Tasca) and PCM reflashed from dealer (75.00). My shop was able to do install (3 hours labor). Car runs and shifts like new. I had the intermittent bang when going into reverse and also a horrible down shift at 1100 rpm (2nd to 1st ? ). Really got annoying in stop and go traffic. It's a shame so many crap/defective parts came with this car from the factory.

I am assuming your LS probly has 100,000 miles or more. I'm not trying be an ass but at that many miles most parts that go bad can't really be classified as defective. I remember a day when a car had 100,000 plus miles it was almost done. I have 171,xxx and when a part goes bad I don't think defective, I think worn out. That being said, a few parts on the LS probly should last longer than they do, like COPs for example. I've heard of bad COPs at less than 50k. But when I have a ball joint go bad with 100k I just chalk that up to general maintenance. That's just my 2 cents. Glad your transmission is fixed.

Hi Hite
The shift solenoid on my car has been a problem for years. Had a recall while still under warranty and they added a friction modifier. Had I known at the time I would have pushed to have the part replaced on Ford's dime. You own an LS and I'm sure you are aware of the parts failure. Love the car but it just seems to that Ford cheaped out on too many parts. Front wheel hubs, coils, Dccv, Seat back falling off, new climate control "head unit" did I say coils, pastic interior parts, plating coming off on interior wheels, rims not holding air due to rust and corrosion, water in the trunk after relacing gasket again. Most are not normal wear items. Just bought new belt, idler and tensinor. Hopefully nothing else will break/fail for the rest of the year. Good Luck

did you try to calibrate tranny yourself before paying someone?
how many miles on the car? did you always ensure that the tranny was properly calibrated over the life of the car?

if not properly calibrated it will become a wear issue. 5 speed automatics were fairly new tech in 1999 and there are plenty of people who still do not know how to maintain a computer-controlled trans.

i would say that lincoln is only guilty of preying on suckers who do not do basic maintenance and troubleshooting in their own garage. certain issues on this car give symptoms of much more serious issues and lead to sky high repair bills for anyone who doesnt invest in a shop manual and a membership to an owners group like this one.

I don't know where you get your material but it is generally bogus. You don't need to periodically calibrate the transmission, or relearn the battery. RED's symptoms were classic for a solenoid failure. I had one fail on my '00 at around 90K miles. Still in warranty but I stupidly followed what your advise was and ended up having to have it done on my dime as I waited too long.

RED, the recall was for the valve body, NOT the solenoid pack. There was a needle valve that wasn't machined correctly (I got to see one at the trans factory in '03) and had a bur on the end, causing it to stick.

I know about the wheel corrosion, had one turned at 100.00 still need to do the other three

I had mine done with a pneumatic wire wheel and a bead sealer aplied. Seems to be holding pressure but still check and add every week. Im glad I paid an extra 900 for these wheels. Just more junk Ford OEM parts, but then after 8 years Im not surprised at a static part failing due to the cheap ass material this car was built with. HOW does it go QUALITY IS JOB ONE. WHAT a FAIL these cars are. No wonder Lincolns done. Good Luck

Why do you still own the car??

If you hate it so much just move on to another vehicle...:)

you never followed my advice on a 00 that was still in warranty. you just like to jump in my sh*t like the other guy on here who accused me of qouting another service manual and then ended up looking like a mo-ron when i posted screen shots that said lincoln ls all over it.

if your car was under warranty and you followed anyones advice on a forum without taking it to the shop first you are a mo-ron too. if you paid for a warranty and you were having problems, common sense tells you to take it into the shop, thats why you bought the warranty.

clearing your shift specs when you have problems or replaced a component that factors into shift timing is not bogus, its free and recommended throughout the shop manual. it doesnt make sense to keep specs for parts you replaced in your shift strategy. the part is gone, you need to get rid of the specs that go along with it. but if you want to be dumb enough to run your trans ragged and replace $300 parts and cause further wear and tear, be my guest.

and anyways, wasnt 2000 the yr that actually HAD solenoid issues that were acknowledged by Lincoln in a TSB?i dont have a gen 1 so i could care less. its not even worth a google search in my book

The TSB for harsh P-R-D, etc. shifting called for a reflash, which I had done (01-14-5; SERVICE PROCEDURE
If the vehicle is built prior to 10/17/2000 and has the conditions listed and does not have the latest PCM calibration, (see chart) reprogram the PCM). I had no codes. The shifts were fine until right before the warranty expired. The subsequent delay wasn't that bad so I did the battery disconnect (your idea) as I already knew about that. At the time I drove ~2K per month so it didn't take long for the problem to rear it's ugly head and I was past 100K miles and had already used my 1 allowed non-warranty repair.

I was also referring to your battery "burn-in" (or whatever you called it) post. All you need to do is drop in the new one and go. Been there. done that!

If you don't have a Gen1 and "could care less" (meaning you DO care!) why answer anyone's Gen1 posts?

i said i could care less which yr of gen 1's had a tsb for the solenoid.

dont blame me for your own dumbas_s decision. if you are having problems with a part that is covered under a warranty and you are asking people for advice on here you are a mo-ron. ill say it twice since you didnt read my first post: if you are having problems with a part that is covered under a warranty and you are asking people for advice on here you are a mo-ron. thats your own dumb decision. should have had the POS towed to them with 99,999.9 miles on it if it was that big of a problem for you.

recalibrating the trans via a battery disconnect doesnt always leave you with a perfect shifting schedule, sometimes you gotta try a few different driving techniques to get it set how you want because the first handful of shifts are crucial to how it is going to shift in the future. I have pulled the battery cable 4 times in one day, first 3 times it shifted like garbage, 4th time it felt exactly how i wanted. boom. leave it alone til something breaks. maybe if you tried to calibrate again your problem would have been solved.

i dont know what you are referring to about burning a battery. but if you just drop a battery in when the car isnt running there is a specific procedure to follow in an 05. not sure about an 00. check the owners manual. i think the guy who has a hulk hogan avatar posted the page number in the owners manual that is related to this subject back in october-ish.

The wheel I had turned hasn't leaked since I had it done. they turned it kinda like a rotor that wheel has no bead seal on it at all. Its just an incovince to take them over there...I will be getting the other three done soon because I like the wheels that are on it and like it stock looking.
