well the dead zone in the steering was fixed with a missing bolt on the steering shaft (way to go Mike Bass Ford!!!) but im still having the shaking/vibrating issue at speed (85+mph)

would simply having an alignment done cure this or could my 3 month old tie rod ends (replaced both inners and both outers when I bought the car) be bad again?

and even with a brand new motor and cruising at 70mph for a good 75% of the tank, im still averaging less than 300 miles to the tank. I would expect a bit more out of the v6 than this... maybe 350... but i just filled up from 1/8 tank yesterday and the trip meter was at 266.8 miles

any ideas?

if you had something done with the steering either the dealership should have included the allignment, or i would think you should get one done
 
i wouldve thought the alignment wouldve been included in the near 7 grand it cost for the the replacement of the engine... but yah... deffinately wasnt.

tranny needs flushed too. :(
 
If you walk in and say i have a shake at 85mph + they will most likly say get out. 85 15-20mph over the speedlimit. you shouldnt be traveling at speeds that high to begin with.
 
Start by getting a tire re-balance done on a road force balancer. Try to get that done at a good alignment shop, and have them do that check of alignment for you also.

This could ultimately end up being a driveshaft issue, but you need to get the easy stuff out of the way before proceeding.

The driveshaft uses weighted bolts that have to go back in the same place they came from but who would know that? Except for folks who use the Ford service book and actually read it.

I'm just curious. I had to state the value of my car for divorce proceedings and with 135K miles, it is not worth much. It is under $3K. Why would you spend so much on an engine on a car that is not worth half the cost of the engine? I'm not trying to bust your stones, just curious. I would do the same, by the way. Except the part where you pay someone else to do it. :D
 
+1 on balancing. I remember the weighted driveshaft bolts as well, and you're right, one would probably not take that into account unless they had the service manual (which I do).

How did your ex get the marauder? I woulda gave her the LS. Then bought another LS :D
 
Yes, definitely check the wheel balance, and go to a place that has the right equipment to test it. Most can only balance up to a speed of 55 or 60 if I remember right.

Yep, I would suggest a tire balance at a good shop. Could be any number of issues tho,,,,bent rim or wheel weight missing, etc, etc. Also some tires just naturally resonate at certain speeds regardless of the balancing. The tire/vehicle resonance will show up when you put a new set on the vehicle. Also the wear on the tread or the tread pattern itself, or a tire might have a separation inside the layers that may cause this problem. Look for any usual wear patterns on the tread.

The ex got the Marauder because it was her daily driver. And even though I felt pretty great driving it, it is nowhere as fun as rowing my own on the LS manual. I willingly gave that car up. Plus it works great for boffing in the back seat, the little ho. :rolleyes:
 
honestly?

I dont like taking out loans...

and I wasnt going to find a decent car with LOW mileage for the same price as the motor...

oh and dad helped a little bit...

and by help, i mean he kinda paid for the whole damn thing ;)

eventually this will get traded in on an 06LS but who knows when that will be...

could the transmission have anything to do with this??
it needs a flush BAD (just havent had time with work)

and it shudders alot and is slow to shift, and shifts hard...
 
That all makes sense. Thanks for the sanity check! Low dollar value does not equate to low worth. To me, this 10 year old car is safe, handles as good as I need, which is pretty good, and in no way feels like it is 10 years old, except when you look it up on KBB.com. Best of luck with your ride.

Yeah, my grandparents are from Nashua, Iowa. I would have been stunned if that is where you lived. The town is small enough I am sure we would have been like 2 degrees of separation.
 
Yeah how did you spend 7k on an engine, as this recent, what happened to the old engine? Also I have done an engine swap in a LS those bolts are not weighted, they are all the same, they "might" be different because of manufacturing, but are the same. I weighed the bolts and nuts after I took them off then read keep them in order. But Ford also says it also must be rebalanced if anything is removed. Easy fix tho if it is the driveshaft, Just get 2 hose clamps and put on driveshaft, rotate and move them till shake goes away, But if shake in steering wheel it is a wheel or tire, and it will not always show up in a balance job.
 
engine was 4200, had to be delivered from Cali to Ohio.
plus parts for hydraulic cooling fan overhaul
plus 2 new coils (they shouldve replaced all of them like I told them to, cuz now I have a nasty misfire)
plus labor and tax

came to 6877.12 (I'm looking at the reciept)

steering issue was solved by replacing the set screw on the intermediate shaft

shaking is hardly noticeable anymore, seems it had alot to do with the way-out-of-balance full size spare I had on there :)

and the sway bar bushings are going on next week if it doesnt snow.
so that should get rid of the final clunk.
 
The engine failure (spun main bearing) was due to negligence by the previous owner. Apparently, after the warranty expires you dont need oil changes anymore (or at least do them every 15,000 miles, or so he thought.

car had 84K on it when I bought it. the dealership and I had agreed to some maintenance before I took delivery.

Included:

filters, fluids, oil change, spark plugs, and front brakes (rotors and pads, as they rotors were rusted BAD)

I watched them do the brakes.

they claimed to do the rest.

Turns out the oil hadnt been changed since 07 [i bought the car summer of last year]

air filter wasnt changed, and it still had the factory plugs in it.

to top it off, that wonderful brake squeel I've had since I tool delivery, which I chalked up to new semimettalic pads, ended up being a lack of pad hardware.

not sure if they just forgot, or didnt want to spend the 12.99 for new hardware or what...

I am at 105K now and besides the front shocks needing replacement and the sway bar bushings and the slight misfire, she runs good.
