Hello ladies and gents. This is my first post here but I've been a long time watcher and observer. I've gotten a lot of good advice and answers off of here and I really appreciate it. Keep up the good work.

Here's my situation. I have an 01 LS6 with about 97K miles on it. While doing maintenance on it recently replacing the pcv elbow, an unknown artifact got into the engine. I say "unknown" because when I finished there were no missing tools or parts. When I started it back up, whatever it was made its way onto the piston. I had a mechanic scope it instead of tearing into it and he said that it has scared up the cylinder wall and possibly marked up the piston head.

So here is where I need some advice. The word I'm hearing from a few mechanics is that the specs in these engine are so tight that it would be best to put a whole different motor in it. Is this true from your experiences? I can find used and rebuilt motors online from $800 to $1600 which seems reasonable but the labor to do the engine swap is getting quoted anywhere from $1300 to $2000. That makes me think it may not be worth it to do the swap. The car was in a hail storm earlier this year so it has a rebuilt title already. Do you think I could get much out of it "as is" or would be better off parting it out? Thanks for reading and sorry it was so long.
