i read the entire "this thread for avic d3 installs" and still came up short on a couple subjects...

i figured we could start fresh with a new thread..

first question reffering to the Nav system... i know that the avic comes with two disc for nav, question is, what is do you have to buy the nav XM module to work the nav? and if not what does this module add to the system?

secondly, in GEN 1 2000 Lincoln LS the 6disc is in the glove box.. since the D3 is ipod and zune capable i'm not too worried about keeping it... would this be a good place to put the bluetooth or xm nav modules?

thirdly i don't currently own an amp or subs, i'm planning on getting them after avic install.. will this system take kindly to a new amp and subs or will this be yet another difficult task?

finally... will the car need to be in reverse to have the rear view on.. just wondering... i kinda want to watch the cops as i'm pulled over quite often.. haha..

Actually, I think it would have been best to simply include these questions in the original thread. Makes it easier for the next guy who is starting a fresh install, to simply have one thread to go to instead of many. Perhaps a mod can decide if its worth merging this one into the original. Not my call.

So, to answer your questions as best as possible:
You do not need XM for the Nav to work. The NAV works right out of the box. One DVD is for East Coast, the other is for West COast. If you want the NAVTRAFFIC service, then yes, you have to subscribe to XM. (and obviously purchase the XM Module.) Not sure if sirius has an equivalent traffic service. (The Avic will support XM and/or Sirius if you purchase those modules, and those services. Again..NAVTRAFFIC is an additional service to XM. It is not included with regular XM service. I pay something like $3.00 extra a month on top of XM, for the Navtraffic service).
I have my XM module and bluetooth module laying flat, side by side in the glovebox. They fit snugly together in there, but they fit. I did have to cut out some holes in the backside of the glovebox for the cables to snake out. You *might* be able to get away with not cutting, and snaking these cables in the top gap between the upper part of the door and top part of the box. If you open your glovebox, you will see what I mean. The glove is also where I place my Ipod and leave it in there.
I dont think extra amps will be a problem with the Avic. I seem to recall some RCA's in the harness for this specific purpose.
The directions state to hook up the reverse wire to the reverse lights. Im assuming this is when the Avic knows to shift the display from whatever you are watching/the Nav screen, to the camera view. If you bypass and have the camera on all the time, Im guessing you'd have a problem here.
Also..to be quite honest, in a car, the rearview when parking is somewhat useless in my experience. You end up using your mirrors, the excellent view out of the windows, and parking bumper sensors if you have them. I have the sensors and a small display, and I've never used the display. The beeps and looking out the window work for me.

Go to the avic411 site and they have the instructions on how to bypass the reverse problem.

Not that I have EVER done that or anything.

Bypass for the reverse? Hadnt seen that one, but then again, I honestly didnt look. I just personally cant think of a time while driving forward I'd get a better visual image from looking downward on the dash to the head unit to get a view from the camera vs..simply looking hrough the rear view mirror? Just me.
