Second 12V at ash tray doesn't work

The plug on the right works, plug on the left doesn't. Checked fuses just to be sure (even though one works) and everything's fine. Checked with a multimeter and I've got power both in the socket and in the plug. However, power at the socket itself seems wonky. If I check voltage at the center of it, I get anywhere from 4V - 9V or so. If I check towards the outer edge, I get 14V. Why are the two sockets a different design? Or was one of mine replaced with some ghetto sh it at some point?

And why am I pulling 14V from these? Shouldn't it be 12V?

Someone just pointed out to me that there's another fuse in the kicker panel for the cigarette lighter. I'm going to check it when my wife comes home since she has the car.

Yep, two fuses. One in the trunk, one in the passenger kick panel. One is a cig lighter, the other a standard 12v socket.

I'm guessing the fuse has nothing to do with it though since I'm getting power there with a multimeter.

well if your not getting full voltage through it, they one of the connections has a problem or the socket is just going bad. make sure all of the contacts or clean.

Why are the two sockets a different design?

one is just a power port, the other is made for a cig lighter, that is why it sits back farther, so the flap can close over the low profile lighter.

I'm thinking the socket is just bad. Like I figured, the fuse in the kick panel is fine.

How do I go about getting a replacement socket? Are they fairly universal? I see part number 19N236 on www.fordpartsgiant.com but that's for the center console, not the ashtray. I wonder if it would work as a replacement.

The sockets are fairly universal on all cars. I just replaced mine today. Salvaged the socket from my retired 1992 toyota camry. Just make sure to remove the fuse from the kick panel to break the circuit to prevent shocking yourself and causing damage to other electrical components. By the way, remove the trims and bezels surrounding the socket for easier access. I have the 2000 version, all I had to do was remove the U trim with a flat screw driver and unscrew the bolts holding down the socket and its bezel.
