Is there any way to adjust/bend  whatever it is that stops the belt in a emergency braking situation? It's lazy retracting which I can deal with but i'm not comfortable with it not always locking.

Any ideas?

Guess I was to quick to start a thread. Theres plenty of info out there on how to fix them. Here I was thinking the Mark viii had some sort of special, one off, organic seat belt retractor.

Oh, you mean like our one off, organic intakes, crankcase ventilation tubes, upper intake gaskets, knock sensors, interiors and exteriors?? It's nice to get lucky sometimes! :D

Is it just the retractor that is bad or the emerg locking mechanism? I know in the past, not on a Mark unit mind you that I have just pulled them apart and cleaned them and at that point just lubed them again. After 15 years you can imagine all the dust and dirt that has been collected and that tends to mess things up. For the actual belt strapping, lay them out in the dishwasher and run them through a cycle but not the dry, they come out awesome and they do not make any noise. You can bag anything you do not want getting wet and after the dishwasher do the clean and lube portion.

The retractor is lazy. The emergency lock is off n' on. Honestly, I just noticed it yesterday while playing with it on break. It might just be due to the cold cause it(Lock) was working better once the int got warmed up. I still plan on taking it out and doing what you suggested to help it pull back in. It's worth a shot.
