What do you guys think about patching a tire from the inside or plugging a tire?

I got a somewhat large screw in my tread right on the edge, its not exactly in the side wall but close to it. I would rather buy 2 tires instead of one but I can just slap on a old set of wheels and do that in the spring. I don't got the cash for both tires now and I just think that buying one tire when the others are a bit older is dumb so I would at least buy 2 and rotate whats on now.

I would like to how ever since they are a new set of wheels that I bought used try to enjoy them for at least a month or until it gets snowy or icy outside and thats why I even contemplated a plug or a inside patch.

if its on the edge of the tread, DONT plug it!!! it flexed too much and will work the plug out, as for the patch, it MIGHT hold, again lots of flex and the patch could peel. so you could try and patch it or just bite the bullet and buy some rubber, sorry :(

Thanks for the bad news.....j/k!

OK so I found that I can get 4 federal tires for the snow in my 17" for 25 bucks more than 1 of my Toyos for my 19's.

Anyone deal with federals before? I am thinking of the federal Himalayas, they look very aggressive for the snow! I like that look allot.

I picked up a screw in one of the Avons on my '04. It was really close to the sidewall, so the shop patched it instead of plugging it, and it was still holding air when I traded the car for my '06 many months later.

general rule of thumb, if the nail is past half the width of the outer row of tread there is too much flex, and it will fail *eventually, hell ive seen "sidewall patches" even seen them work when i installed them at old job, still would i trust it to put it on my car, hell no! im buying tires

OK, I'm gunna go to the tire shop when I get out today and get they're opinion but I would still like a opinion on the Federal tires.

If I can save on my Toyos ( over $200 or just around $200 a piece ) I guess it wouldn't hurt getting some snow tires for the winter for my 17's cause regardless I'm gunna use them for the winter.

The screw in my tire was in the last row of outboard tread, past the half-way point. The tire shop tried plugging it first, but it leaked (within a day or two), so they went back and patched it. I don't remember exactly when that happened, but I'm pretty sure I got at least 4 months (which would be about 8,000 miles, including the hottest days of summer) out of it.

I don't know anything about Federal tires. If you want good, inexpensive tires, take a look at the Avon Tech M550s; they're an incredible bang for the buck. In the stock 17" size (235/50ZR17), they're $119 each from the Tire Rack. If you go to 245/45ZR17, they drop to $108 each...

This is the tire I am talking of. I love the look for a snow tire and from what I have gathered alot of sports cars have been putting them on for a great winter tire plus they are fairly priced. I e-mailed the company directly to see if I could get a directory of vendors, I gues Ill just have to wait and see what the tire guy says today about these also.

They are about 25 dollars cheaper than the Avons but from what I gather they are great!
