what exactly does this do? i've never heard of this, but does it improve air flow? small hp gains like 1-3 probably right?

1- makes slightly louder noise thru intake under moderate to hard acceleration
2- probably a little
3- probably not

The ones on the intake tube kinda a looks thing to smooth them off. The one you want get rid of is the one in the pass fenderwell attached to the airbox. This one has a tiny hole like 1.5 inches in dia that engine has to breath thru.

They pretty much are just silencers for the car. The car is a luxury car, and for that reason, they wanted it to be quiet as possible I believe.

Also, Right On The Mark, the baffle under the fender, I was going to remove it, but the air intake box mounted on the circular piece and seemed like it held it in place, so I left it there. Seemed like it would be more easier to get water in there also with it removed, and it would be drawing air from all over the place, instead of a direct air flow into the box.

Thats one of the first things peeps pull off Mk8's

ooh.. is there a write up with pictures on how to do this? i'd love to make it louder for free haha, i honestly don't care if it gives any hp, louder = better for me lol. i'd love to do this, just need to see pictures on how its done on a gen 1, which ones to remove too. this won't bring up error codes right?

I did the elephant trunk removal, and the cap from Ace on the upper. Decided not to drill the holes in the box.
Stock filter, works good.

i heard k&n's are not good for these cars. the filter doesn't filter like it should.
i also wouldn't drill the holes.. let's more heat from the engine compartment into the intake.

Leave the box alone, just use the big opening in the bottom of the box, and stay away from the oiled filters with our cars as they cause more grief than good. Use a quality (ie. Wix) filter.

The other big advantage to removing the baffle is to make your air ride compressor easily available for servicing.

i wouldn't drill holes into the box, sucks more hot air in. i tried that link and i get a list of things to choose, don't see removing intake silencers, and i always planned on making a "cold air intake", need to order the parts next year i guess. i need a write up and pictures on how the removal of the air silencers was done, if anyone could find me that? i tried looking. thanks

If you have a cold air intake (or cone air filter) arent you sucking in hot air because there is hardly any cover on that? Much less the front part of the filter and thats where the holes are drilled in the tutorial.

And its in that list on the web site. I promise.

Heck heard all the K&N filters don't filter like they should. Reason why they "increase" hp is because they have less filtration, and allow more particles into your intake and engine. :shifty: I just stuck with a Fram one, allows moderate flow, but it filters. Wix is a no go I believe.

Yeah I recharged mine and that pink oil is all over the place. I know it cant be good for the MAF.
I asked the guy at oreilys if he knew how to recharge it. And he told me that hes never done it before. I was really shocked because they always tell you how much better they are and such. They dont even use them.

I drilled the front of my box, and within 1,000 miles it started to run weird. Now the box has duct tape over the holes until I get unlazy and make it to a junk yard.

?????

Something else is wrong with your car, or you didn't put all the plugs and vac lines in the intake tube when you put it back together. I have about 200,000 miles (vs. your 1,000) in Mark VIII's with the front of the box either drilled out or totally cut out. It creates no driveability problems. It probably doesn't help performance, but it doesn't hurt.

I drilled holes in my 1993 Mark VIII's air box many years ago, and later then cut most of the front of it out. I also cut the front of the box out of my 1998's box.

Other then the coils packs, plug wires, vacuum tee and a few other vacuum lines going bad, maybe it didn't hurt. I just didn't like the fact the entire front was open to the rain that could get in the MAF.
