the bottom rear bolts of the housing seem impossible to get off, a wrench is too long and you cant get a ratchet or ratchet extension onto a socket even if you're lucky enough to get a socket onto it. has anyone used any tricks to remove these bolts? IMG_1557.jpg

If you can weld or know someone who does you can make a tool to work. Cut off the open end of a wrench and weld a 1/4" wratchet extension to the wrench section. Thats what I did.

thanks joegr thats exactly what i need! replacing this plastic trash with the jaguar parts.

furthermore would anyone happen to know anything about a plastic wrapped rectangular piece of foam that sits down behind the thermostat housing? its odd looking and im not sure if it is even supposed to be there or not, i don't see any reason why such a thing would be there, i was first thinking like it was a rat nest or something because the car has been sitting recently, and i never noticed it before. what is this foam thing, should it be there or should i remove it.

well it is pretty ripped up at this point. it was already torn when i initially found it.

theres no info on what the thing is huh? because if its supposed to be there then ill surly need a replacement for whatever it is.

All I have is that it's base part number is 6N041 and it's called "Insulator."

Noise abatement if I remember right.

Per the bolt, 1/4" extension with a wobbly end if I remember right from when I did mine. Wasn't that hard to remove with basic Craftsman quality stuff. Just don't round it off more or you'll really be pissed about it.

Searching would have yielded the following: Re&Re - Jag Aluminum Upgraded Thermostat housing - GEN 1 V8

I did that article up when I went through my cooling system refresh w/ Jag Stat housing.

Tool you need is called a 3/8 -5/16 Brake Bleeder Wrench.

two back bolts can be shortened a bit to ease re-install.
