So I've been noticing lately that there's a rattling noise coming from the engine right before it hits 2k rpm. It's most noticable in 2nd gear, and it seems to go away after a little bit and the rpms raise or it shifts.

Any ideas on what it could be?

Lol I knew I forgot to add something to the first post. '97 base model with about 105k on the clock. No mods done to it that I know about.

This is just a guess, but in my 97, that is just the rpm that the exhaust starts to resonate, mayb its just that shakin :q:q:q:q around in there?

Any performance loss???

My 97 does the same thing. I've narrowed it down to timing chain, gears, and tensioners.

If its faint at idle but when the engine is revved it becomes louder, it most likely has something to do with the timing chains, tensioners, etc.

Well hopefully it is just the exhaust resonating. No noticable performance loss though. Do you guys think it's anything to worry about?

while under hood rev it slowly and see if the noise will come out. you should be able to tell if its coming from the front of the engine. if it is...tensioners/guides.

mine does the exact same thing at the exact same rpm level, only in gear though, it's done it since I bought it (about a year ago) and hasn't caused any problems yet (that I know of) I'd sure like to figure it out though

Yep, mine only happens when it's in gear too.. so I can't tell where it's coming from by popping the hood and revving it. The most probable cause sounds like the exhaust resonating right now since it's not present at idle.

I hate to do this, but can someone tell me what followers are and if I need to worry about it?

Followers are valve train. You can't say for sure what the issue is but you can always try using a different oil like the new Amsoil 0w-20 and one of their EAO filters it should help with the noise.
