This is the one about the rubbing or squeaking coming from the steering wheel/column. Is this fixed by the additive in the power steering or is that for a different problem? If there is a different fix, what would that fix be?

TSB04-10-01 is the power steering squeak. Attached :)

I get the squeak when it's cold out and I do a lot of low-speed maneuvering. Adding the friction modifier only fixes it for a couple of thousand KMs. I plan on changing my PS fluid this spring time with fresh Mercon V.

That's what I figured. I'll get around to fixing it after I figure out whether I have a failing O2 sensor or a failing coil.

yeah check the u joints on the intermediate shaft, spray them with a heavy dose of wd40 and see if it goes away. if it does, it will only be temporary and you will eventually need a new intermediate shaft ( i just got used to the noise and give the u-joints a shot of wd40 when im trying to impress someone with my rebuilt-salvage late model luxury car). there was a discussion on this not too long ago, a user named 'joger' did the legwork. i would recommend searching for that thread

Steering wheel whine...

for the guys that have had this issue, can you confirm if these is the sound? And is really putting the additive in supposed to fix it, since it seems to be coming from the steering wheel itself, like it could just need some WD40 or something...not that I would do that.

Also just got an oil change at the dealer and was told that my steering fluid was dirty and should be flushed. I guess it could be related?

Video: (that last noise after i insert the key is the seat. I'm wondering about the noise when i turn the wheel only lol)

Nah, just upselling.

That's also exactly how my wheel sounds. Goes away in spring :)

Edit: Not as bad and not throughout the entire motion.

It could be, but probably isn't. While power steering fluid flushes are mostly done just for dealer/shop profit, it's not a bad idea to do it every five or six years. You can do this yourself nearly as well as the dealer does, for much less money.

If steering effort is smooth and it's just the noise, then it probably is the fluid/rack.
If effort is chunky, then it may be the intermediate shaft instead.

Holy

what an irritating noise that is, I wouldn't

for very long !

~ hope you get it corrected as soon as possible Mlara.

yeah thats it. it sounds like its in the cabin but its really the u joints on the intermediate shaft. there is a thread on this that is only a few months old. wd40 will silence it for ~ a week. and yes it only does it when it starts getting cold, goes away altogether in the summer. mine isnt as bad as yours, but i have half the miles. mine has no problems turning at all. i do have a small leak on the rack. lincoln wanted to put a whole new rack in... im cool with the squeky/wiping sound over shelling out more than i spent on the whole car for a new rack..

Since the topic came up...

I guess I should update...

All new fluid plus the additive completely got rid of my noise. It has been noise free since February.

I'd recommend this to anyone. The additive costs a few bucks from the dealer. Even if you don't do a full flush like I did it the additive might still help. Definitely "one of the cheapest fixes for the LS."

Thanks to all the guys who contributed.

Realizing this thread is 2 years old, just an FYI thing. Had my LS in for oil/filter/rotation and the service writer mentioned the TSB for the power steering fluid flush and change, $120 plus tax.

My steering wheel has been making the "rubbing" noise since I bought it, but it's been so in frequent that I haven't worried about it.
