Pulled over today....

First thing I thought was "Yeah pull over the young black man with an LS!! :Bang . Just kidding. First time in about 10 years getting pulled over. Turns out it was because I was missing the front license plate. They said in Cali its up to the dealer to mount it. How in the hellfire and brimstone do you mount it anyway? I know there's a thread on this and when Im not as lazy Ill look for it but any responses are appreciated.

If I am not mistaken, it will require you getting a bracket for the license plate and you will then have to drill holes in your bumper (2 of them) and rivet them in. If you don't have rivets or access to a rivet gun, I am sure some screws would work just fine.
 
wait, are we required to have both front and rear license plates? I thought the law just requires you to have one...?

Well your sig says you're in New Jersey and Im in California. Cali law says both and its been that way since I've been driving (1983). Really sucks too. Takes away from the beauty of the car.

I see, that stinks. Since it's my first car, I figured that only one plate was required. Hmmm...
 
Shoot, I just googled some more, and it seems that license plate frames are illegal in NJ. Uh, guess that means I need to remove the dealer frame from the rear of my car.

Now if my car is registered in MD, but I also drive it around in NJ, which rule do I abide by- license plate frame (MD) or no frame (NJ)? I assume the MD one?

You always have to abide by the more stringent of the two. Alot of people think it goes by where the car is registered but thats not so.

I have one of the license plate mounting brackets for the front of the car, it was in my trunk when I bought the stinkin lincoln...

I can post pics in a few when the lil lady wakes her ass up..
 
50-70$ fine to not have both in Missouri.. Kansas only needs one.. I have never had my front one on, and so far so good *probably gonna get pulled over today for it*. I can't imagine putting that ugly thing on the front :P it sits under my driver seat peacefully.

I haven't had a front plate on my car since I installed the McLaren lower grille. I just zip-tie it to that grille when I take it in for inspection, since 2 plates are required.

Was taking the wife and papoose out to see "March of the Penguins" the other evening and got stopped -> 55 in a 45 zone, no front plate, tinted rear plate cover, and 27% tint (limit is 355). The officer was working a DWI patrol so he didn't care about the violations.

I live in NJ and I have NY plates with the dealer frames on both front and back plates. I guess I'm going to remove the dealer frames before My wife and I gets pulled over for it, even though we've driven around and had the NJ cops behind us and they haven't pulled us over. I rather be safe than sorry, I'm going to take the dealer frames off when I get home!! :Bang
 
my cousin lives in NJ and got a ticket for the license plate frame but the trick is i believe if u can see the county (i believe thats whats on the plate bottum center) and the words garden state, your fine.
 
I think Cali officers are now really enforcing the front plate law, every time I see someone pulled over, 9/10 times they have no front plate. My friend has gotten pulled over plenty of times for no front plate.
 
No Plate Frames In Jersey?

I have always...ALWAYS had license plate frames on my cars in New Jersey and have never once been ticketed or even warned because of them and I've been driving since the Johnson administartion.
 
Heres one for ya... seems that Michigan only requires rear unless you get personalized plates... then both ends! (or so it seems, they give you 2 personalized, but only one 'generic' plate, and all the personalized I have seen, have 2 plates)

Also, while the letter of the law in some states may say 2 plates, I think most of the time if your from a 1 plate state, and only have one plate, they overlook the lack of a plate in the 2 plate states.... would be kinda hard to get 2 plates from 1 plate states just for use in other states...

Go by where the car is licensed. Whatever state the plates are from, obey those laws. 99% of cops will leave you alone for such minor things. And, for many things they have to. For example, they cant write you a ticket for no front plate if your state doesnt require them -- because your state wont provide you with one in that instance.

27 years in Law Enforcement agree with you. There is always the 1% but that 1% is not the way laws are rationally enforced. The only law that I know some California Officers enforce even if you are legal in your home state are the Cali tint laws. Even then they may cut you a break. Especially if you are from a desert state like Arizona.

So your saying that if I live in Florida and we can have frames and I travel to NJ I ahve to take it off once I get there. This really does not make sence. I believe that you follow the rule of the state that your vehicle is registered in.

You gotta love Arizona! One plate...tint laws are VERY relaxed... :Beer

But if you travel to a state where the laws are different...and are just passing through, I can't see any way in the world they could convict you of having just one plate. We only get one! That would be one good way to start a "border" war between state law enforcement agencies. Utah and Idaho got into that many years ago. If you were in the other state, you could just about count on a ticket for something. Some judge finally stepped in and put a stop to it.
 
in california it is state law to have frnt license plate, the reason they pull people over for it is to have an excuse to pull someone over and find something worse...drugs alcohol etc...
in california its only a fixit ticket, zip tie that thing on, im sure all 2000 LS came with a front license plate so the holes should already be there, if they are not there then maybe you car was wrecked and had a new frnt end put on it....but anyway its only a fix it, put it on take to a cop, take it off and go pay your 11 dollars

I am with you on that. I only have one plate on my car here in Florida and will not add another simply to pass through a state that requires two. Besides, my Beast would not look the same with a plate up front. It would certainly detract from the overall appearance. I feel sorry for the folks that have to have a plate up front.
