when i turn the headlight knob to auto, the lights come on, even when it is daytime. I think the sensor is located at the front of the dash, and there is nothing covering it. Maybe the sensor is just bad. anyone ever had this prob. or know what else it might be??

The sensor is located in the front of the dash. If your car is a 2000-2002, the part number is XW4Z13A018AA and should cost around 42.04. To replace it, you will need to disconnect your battery, remove the windsheild frame moldings (on the inside). You will also need to move.......not remove your defroster grille assembly...located directly behind the windsheild. From there, you remove your photocell and amplifier (your ambient light sensor). To install, you would reverse that procedure. All this is assuming that is the faulty part. It shouldn't take you more than 1/2 an hour.....when i had to replace mine, it didn't take any more than that.The DUDE said:
However, the first thing I always do if something is malfunctioning is to check the fuses. It's the cheapest thing you can do.......otherwise, it could be the light switch assembly. But, it sounds as though your sensor is malfunctioning. Best of luck and I hope you get it figured out. So 1)check the fuses, 2)replace the light sensor.

If you do have to replace the photocell. Be careful when you put the defroster grill back in. At sometime mine had been removed and the the little foam strips on top of the ducts was out of place. They are sticky back but I guess the adhesive gets weak from the sun and heat. This caused a night marish rattle on rough roads when the grill would tap the ducts. I remedied it this past weekend.
