So I am looking for a new car. I have always liked the lincoln ls and there happens to be one in the area. However its a 2000 which I am kinda leary of and its a v8. I am aware of the cam tensioner problems and plan on replacing it right after I get it.

Its extremely clean and in great shape otherwise but here is its problem.

It is idling pretty rough and has almost no acceleration, it just doesn't respond to throttle input, it will eventually rise to 3000 rpms but still has nowhere near the power it should. He is going to give me some extra coils with it.

Even if it was the coils it doesn't seem like it would be this bad, I feel like it could either be the MAF or the TPS. Are these common to go out on these?

2000 is the worst year for the LS. plus being a gen1 its going to have more problems but still a great car as long as you take care of that. I wouldn't rule out the coils on the rough idling, when those start going they can pretty much cause any problem with this car and are always the first to check. Not saying they are the problem but check that out better.

Yeah I have been trying to find later years I can afford but had no such luck right now. The owner seemed to know what he was doing with the car and appeared to take good care of it otherwise. I guess I am also worried about the transmission problems they have. Is there any preventative maintenance besides regular changes that can prolong these transmissions.

Yeah, 2000 is the WORST year

The worst ls you can buy is one that wasn't cared for properly.

I agree. My 2000 model hasn't given me that many problems. Usual maintanence I see it as.

So, if you can barely afford this twelve year old LS that is in bad shape, you're not going to be able to afford to bring it back to good working order and keep it there. Even if it is just the coils (it isn't, the present owner would have fixed that before showing the car), the cats are probably in bad shape from all the misfires.

it is probably the cats, coils and clean the MAF sensor. how many miles by the way and also do you have a check engine light. even if you dont you will still hear the BEEBS, if that is the case go to autozone and have it check the codes anyways to see if anything comes up.

PASS, keep looking. By the way how much is the guy asking for it?

Well thanks for the input guys. I did end up buying it, mainly due to lack of options and needing a car. I found out it was only running on 4 cyl ... all of which were on the passenger side, the entire drivers side bank was out!

I replaced two, and am replacing the other two tomorrow.

Then there is the issue of no dash lights xD. Found that out last night, hopefully its just a fuse....

Thanks for all the help everyone. It looks like I am going to be replacing the fan as well, the pump seems to be leaking and the fan doesn't work at all. Caused a small overheat the other day, checked tstat, degas bottle and everything else, fan isn't turning on at all though and after filling it has been fine since then as long as I am not in stop and go traffic.

Also still has a stutter in acceleration and more noticeably once tc lockup happens. Gonna investigate that tomorrow.

my man, you bought a lemon...you shoulda just got a civic or 4 cyl for now

gl with the car tho

I strongly recommend putting in an aftermarket electric fan following hlite's thread. It's an afternoon's work, and some of those fans can be had for around $100. Fixing the stock system will absolutely cost you more.

The stutter could be the coils on the other side, assuming you have the first four replaced. You did put in new plugs with the new coils, right?

Good luck, it's an adventure.

Haha, this is my ... 9th car in 5 years. I buy broken ones and fix them ... drive them for a while, get bored with them and then move onto my next one.

I have also have a Land Rover Discovery, now that thing is a lemon! But so far working on this car hasn't been particularly painful, my 98 olds aurora was a heck of a lot more difficult to work on than this.

As for getting a civic ... I would rather die :)
