i've had a here and there issue with my car not turning over for a while. turn the key and nothing.. come back later and it starts fine w/e it is didn't go away this time. had the starter checked, it works, battery is good, fuses are good, there's power to the ignition fuse under the hood. i did a search and someone mentioned something about the short wire on the starter being corroded or loose so i'm gonna check that out. just wanted some experienced advice/suggestions on what else i can do to narrow the problem down

sounds like a loose or bad connection to me. Check all power and ground wires to battery, fuse box, starter, and chasis ground.

My car was doing the same thing.
I wouldnt turnover I would let it sit and then it would start.
It took me awhile to get to the bottom of it.

Mine was the starter solenoid, it gets baked by the exhaust.

the push on connector on the starter sometimes doenst make a good connection...and
+1 for what fordnut said
I've never seen one of the starters DIE, but the solenoids do.
I've replaced 2 solenoids in 400K miles

I had this issue after the car was run enough to heat up. It was hit or miss when pumping gas. Got to the point where I pretty much left it running to fuel up.

Replaced solenoid - same thing. I then replaced the starter, which was pretty dang easy, and everything has been fine since.

yeah im starting to think its the solenoid myself(and the fact the car hates me). i checked all the connections i could. they're all tight & clean, juice is getting to the starter. how hard is it to replace the solenoid? im so d@mn tired of all the little things with this car that go wrong its ridiculous lol. i fixed the leaking oil filter adapter..brake line goes as soon as the car is down and im ready to drive.. fix that drive to the store and come back.. wont start. i've got a 6" suspension lift, warn winch & custom bumper/brushguard i'm dying to put on my truck but can't until the car is running good

well.... you might not believe this...

But the first word/initials in your posts subject line might have a bearing on the issue.

If you call your car a POS it'll be a POS.
If you cuss your car when you work on it, you'll pay for those words in blood.

I learned this along time ago, back in the mustang days.

try it.. you may suprise yourself.

The Solenoid is easy to change, worst part about it..ya gotta take the starter off.
no big deal.. dont start cussing the job, you'll only make it worse.

take the starter off and remove the old solenoid, it's fairly obvious when you get it out in front of you.
Then go buy a new one and put it on.

no sweat.

yeah i've been working on playing nice but that car really knows how to push my buttons lol. thanks for the info i've got stuff to do for the next couple days but after that i should have the new solenoid in and see where that gets me

They are a pain to work on, and it sucks when they are broke.
When running right they are a blast to drive.
The starter can be a pain to get but with the swivel or Universal Joint in the right spot you will get it.
The top bolt is a PITA.
A couple cuss words might fly :D

Remove the passenger front wheel. Find a shorty ratchet. I was shocked at how easy it was to work on it by approaching it from the side and front.

Like I said before, I replaced the solenoid and it did not help. I had the car up on ramps but replaced the solenoid without taking the starter off. I would not recommend doing just the solenoid since it locks into a nylon arm to articulate the bendix gear. I was familiar with how it hooked so did not have an issue.

solenoid did the trick & it was a breeze getting it on the starter. i just tilted the starter to bring the arm back and slipped the solenoid over it. after dropping the subframe & all the work to get my oil pan off a few weeks ago, that starter was nothing. now hopefully i can get my truck lifted next weekend and get the bumper in the works. thanks again

LOL I bet I would do the starter all day long over pulling a k member.
Glad you got it fixed, these cars can piss a guy off!
