I did a search and didn't find anything in regards to portable GPS systems. I found info about installing in-dash systems, but nothing in regards to the costs associated with such jobs.

If I go with a protable GPS system I was hoping for a good deal, say under or around $400.

I was checking out the Tomtom Go 300 and the best price I found was $450 shipped. I want most of the bells and whistles...touch screen, voice notification, 3D maps - most importantly updated maps...so nothing too cheap.

Any recommendations on other brands...iWay...magellan...garmin or places to purchase other than eBay?

If I don't go with the portable navigation system I was also debating getting the in-dash DVD/NAVI screen installed depending on cost. Any suggestions or feedback on this sort of job in terms of cost and "value" and what brand I should go with? Like I said...most of my searches only turned up "how-to's" for installation...

Thanks in advance.

It's a lot more money than you're looking at, but the new Pioneer AVIC-Z1 is amazing. You have to bypass the "in motion defeat" programming, but that's not hard. Once you do that, you have full NAV and DVD capability.

Find the model you want and then Froogle it. I used to buy from gpsdiscount.com but now I see there are cheaper places to buy from on froogle. Have you looked into Garmin's etrex? I have an older one but it still seems very good. $400 for the TomTom seems very good though.

The Alpine Blackbird. It's a GPS and mp3 player. If you have a Alpine deck you can plug it into it also. The thing is about 650 but it is well worth it. It's only a little bit bigger then an IPOD. Pretty sick, check it out.

Yea...I wouldn't mind spending some ching on an in-dash system because I have a drop down 13" screen from the roof with no DVD player attatched and that would make it much easier to operate. I've heard the tomtom 300 had outdated maps. Im a mapquest junkie which is why I wanted the GPS in the first place. I've noticed mapquest has its mistakes here and there but does anyone know anything about this compared to say the tomtom? Is there a way to download "updated maps" into certain navigation systems?
