Hello, I'm new to this site and was wondering if someone would mind sharing their knowledge with me...

I recently bought an 05 Lincoln LS (i believe 3.0) V6. The car had been sitting for about 6-8 months without being started/ran. I hooked up a battery pack(battery was dead) and drove it 3-4 miles. Everything sounded good, and ran pretty strong.

After i have the car towed to my house (license plates were expired) I proceeded to replace the dead battery and change the oil. After i finished that, i went to take the car for a spin and i believe it went into "Fail Safe" mode and the the dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree.

At this point I decided to pull some codes (hoping it was something simple). The codes i got were these

KOEO: P1000 P2104 P2112
KOER: P0505 P1184 P1288

So i did some research on the internet and I came to the conclusion that I might have a couple bad coils. So from what I found on the interweb, I decided to go ahead and replace the #4, #5, and #6 coil packs. This didn't seem to help anything.

So my question is.....Is there a a "trick" or method to getting the car out of Fail Safe mode, or is it just a matter of fixing the problem and it will take itself out of Fail Safe mode?

Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED. You can email me too if you would prefer J_Collett@fuse.net.

Is it definitely a v6? Was the battery new and proper for the car? These cars are notorious to need perfect batteries. Any poor battery performance will cause issues.
What caused you to determine it was the coil packs?
You will need to relearn the idle after a new battery, do a search and follow the steps.

I think that you are on the right track, but you didn't replace all the coils. Most likely, your problem is coil #3, but you really need to replace all of them. Also, you need to replace all of the spark plugs at the same time. (Bad coil kill spark plug, killed spark plug now kills new coil, and so on.)

One of those codes is because the battery was disconnected.
Two are because you ran the self-test before the engine was warmed up.
And the other three are all related to the ETC failsafe. It is still most likely (but not 100% certain) that the ETC failsafe is being caused by a bad coil. I know that the remaining three coils are harder to change, but why would you assume that changing only the easy ones would fix it?

^+1 the pass side rear most two coils are usually the ones responsible (95% of the time its the rear most (coil 3)) for throwing the car into fail safe mode.

rule nunmber 1 on all LS's is when 1 coil goes bad you need to replace them all with the spark plugs. do that first and reset the system by removing the battery for a couple of hours and then try again.

The reason i only changed the driver side coils (which i forgot to mention) was that the (i believe) coolant temperature sensor that is located on between #5 and #6 coils had started leaking and forming small pools near the coils. After replacing the sensor and cleaning up the coolant, i could see the number 5 coil arcing to the valve cover. That's why I only replaced that side.

So your guys' recommendation would be to replace the rest of the coils and all of the plugs and the Fail Safe mode will cure itself?

I appreciate the help.

Absolutely. The coils on the LS are NOTORIOUS for this. Either way your probably going to have to replace them soon anyway so its better to just get it over with since it will probably fix your problem anyway

it has on mine, twice.

its definitely a lot cheaper and easier than the other options.

These cars destroy coils, so that's probably where your problem lies, like the other guys said. If you change one, change them all along with the spark plugs. Good luck with your new LS! You're in the right place, the guys on this forum really know what they're talking about. They've provided me with a tremendous amount of knowledge
