Hi,

I want to paint the wood grain on the center console. i was just wondering what paint should i use and what prep work must be done to the wood before i paint it so that the paint won't come off.

not really a whole lot different than metal, just more porous. I would sand - 400 grit/seal/prime/sand 600 grit then topcoat/wet sand 1500/clear if that is your choice or buff to a gloss.

Good high quality Automotive paint would work just fine. I have parts in my 65 T-Birds that were painted back in the 80's that are still show quality today.

Actually to be honest you dont really need to do all that work. If it is in good shape then you should just:
sand it w\ 320,
prime
block with 320 then 500
then seal
then spray on your color and clear.

When spraying wet on wet wet sanding really isn't necessary. If you were to do each step with significant time in between, then yes i would wet sand it.

And make sure to place it out in the sun for about a week, or under a heat lamp for a couple of hours before buffing. It lets the material cure. It will save you many headaches in the future.
