Painting Rear Surround?

I was told by my body shop guy that it will peel and chip? How are they preparing the surround so the paint will stick right? I want to do this and then get the McLaren front grille:D
 
My body shop guy shot mine for free. I left it with him a few days, until he had the occasion to do some work on a black car. He did say that, if he was charging for it, he'd disclaim it, since the paint-over-"chrome" is subject to chipping/peeling. It's been on there for three years with not one chip, etc.

Paint over chrome will chip/peel. Unfortunately what our cars have isnt chrome. Its shiny plastic.
 
I think actually it's chrome on top of plastic. So it's subject to the same chipping. If it's done right it won't peel. But it's extra work to do right.

Hang on a sec....time out. Isnt chrome a "process" and not so much a material? Isnt it something that binds to metal? How can plastic have chrome on it?
 
A ton of companies chrome anything. I've seen one that even did a nerf football just they felt like it. You can chrome just about whatever you want now adays.

The chrome on plastic is a process similar to painting. It isn't the same process as doing a three stage chroming process on metal. It's actually called vacuum metallizing. Do a search on plastic chrome on google. It will tell you everything you need to know how chrome gets onto plastic.

Well, i took your suggestion, kinda (did yahoo instead). That process is described as a "chrome-like" finish. They say it doesnt have the qualities of chrome, just shines like it. Interesting stuff though.
