Today while I was breaking the "SRVC (P) BRAKE" message came on in the console where my mileage usually shows. I had no problem braking, however. Anyway, I pull over and check my brake fluid and brakes, but the fluid levels are fine and I don't see anything leaking behind the tires. There's no warning message on the dash-- just where the mileage usually displays.

Previously, I have a "Lamp Out" message in the same place, even though the bulb in question had been replaced.

Also, I just got new rear brakes in the rear a few months ago. I've always had squeeky issues while braking but that has happened always.

Any ideas what this could be? Since my lamp and brake lights are both coming on when they shouldn't be, I'm thinking maybe something weird is going on electronically.

Thanks.

Possible battery going bad. How is your climate control?

Service parking brake has nothing to do with your main brakes or the hydraulic brake fluid. It has everything to do with the electric parking brake. It could be a fault of the electronic parking brake module, or a mechanical fault with the parking brake cables or actuator.

Have you tried setting and then releasing your parking brake? That might be all you need to do.

The service parking brake message takes higher priority than the bulb out warning. Once you resolve the parking brake issue, the bulb out warning will return. The bulb out warning is there because of a problem. Get someone to help you verify that the bulb in question is actually working, both the parking light filament and the brake light filament (if it is a brake light bulb).

Where these messages display is called the message center. Your odometer reading is on the other display. I assume by mileage that you mean either the distance to empty or the average MPG indications. You can change these with the message center buttons, and you can temporarily reset the warnings.

Verified that I really did have a bulb not working, above the back plate. I guess I missed it. So there’s that.

As far as the brakes, though, sometimes setting and releasing the park brake does solve the problem, and sometimes it doesn’t. It doesn’t affect my actual braking, and I never use the park brake anyway.

I want to have it looked at, but I’m not gonna fork out the cash now if it’s not a safety concern.

As far as climate control, it’s acting weird. I could swear that I’ve got cold air coming out of some vents and hot out of others.

Have you read any of the threads on here? DCCV is a semi-common problem for the climate control.

Would you care to share any of the details of your LS, such as the year and engine? It would help with the parking break issue. For example, if you have an 04, there was a known problem with some of the parking brake modules.

Use of the parking brake every time you stop is a very good idea. Is it really too much trouble to pull that switch every time? Is it worth the risk of getting the transmission stuck in park or damaging the parking gear?

I've got the V6 04 LS. I'd be interested to hear about this issue you're talking about.

I'm not opposed to using the parking brake more, I just have no idea why I would. If it's better for the car, I'm willing to start doing that.

There was a TSB out advising dealers to replace the parking brake module on 04 LS under warranty if the customer had any complaint, instead of just resetting the error. It didn't give any more detail, but to me that implies that they knew of some production or design problem with the 04 modules.

There is another thread for you to watch about this.

It will be interesting to hear his results when he replaces the module.

Well, looks like I'm in good company with the problem, then. Thanks for all the help. I'm following that thread now.

In the meantime, I'm watching that commercial where the old Lincoln drives through a fireball and transforms into the MKZ. Maybe if there really is an actual braking issue I'll be trying to stop one day and something magical will happen.

Do your DATC self test before you do anything else!!!!!!

Did the test. Yeah, something is wrong with the DCCV.

If it has nothing to do with the breaks, I'm not concerned. Also, I realized that if I just use the top vents and the floor, I'll still only get cold air out of the vents-- it's those middle vents that have warm air blowing. So, I guess this repair can wait.
