My mark is overheating. My idler pulley seized and my belt broke the car overheated. I fixed the idler pulley and put on a new belt. Now when i run the car the temp will spike almost imediatley to over heat. I am hoping it is just a thermostat. Has anyone had this happen? Where is the thermostat on the mark? Am i a gonner?

AS long as you did not drive it over-heated for more than a couple minutes, you should be fine. The water pump may be damaged - or, and this is REMOTE, but I want to bring it up, the belt is routed wrong.

It would be odd for the t-stat to go bad at the same time, but its located by the oil filter, where three coolant lines meet, one coming up from the bottom of the radiator. You will loose all of you coolant doing this and replacing with fresh would be best, dont save the old.

Try these things first. Remove the belt again or at least remove it from the water pump. Now turn the water pump by hand, it should move smoothly and easily. If not, the pump is bad or going bad.

Next open the crossover tube located at the top front of the engine, it may be a pain to get open but you will have to get it open to fill with coolant if you do engine surgery anyway. A pipe wrench carefully placed may work, vise grip is better. Its a small cap, don't crack the whole thing off! Once open, make sure its full. If there is air in there fill with coolant or distilled water til its full, replace cap and run engine (do not rev it) for about 30 seconds and repeat til all the air is worked out. If there was air in there it was the most likely cause of over-heating.

I tore into the car today, there was air in the crossover tube but i havent been able to get the spout off i broke a 1/4 inch socket off in it i have two engines and will see if i can get the crossover on it. The belt is routed just like it is pictured. will fill and see one i get the tube off.
