Where is the speed sensor located...and is the replacement possible without taking the car to a dealership?

Thats sounds like your output shaft speed sensor on your tranny. It would be a PITA to reach with the trans still in the vehicle due to it being fairly high up near the rear of the trans. I haven't looked at the accessibility in my LS so I might be wrong in the difficulty to reach it.
