first i use mobil one, so i change my oil every roughly 5000 miles, all i do is highway. when the dash indicates change oil soon, then it says oil change required, is that a standard thing. does the car go off of time or miles or is it pretty specific that it senses the oil actually needs changing. i know mobil one lasts atleast 5000 miles so i am not really worried, i pretty much ignore the status message.

Unlike MB, BMW, Porsche..the LS Oil Service Indicator is STRICTLY mileage based. I have 97k miles on my LS. I've been using Motorcraft filters and WalMart's brand of Full Synthetic 5w-30 every 10k miles since I went out of warranty a few years back. Engine burns no oil, runs strong.

If you want oil that lasts longer switch to AMSOIL full synthetic. Recommended drain intervals are 25,000 miles or 12 months for normal driving. It costs about $1 more per quart than Mobil, but lasts 5 times longer.

I use full synthetic and change mine around 6-7k miles (or about 2 complete "change oil soon" computer cycles). My oil doesn't even look that bad and I drive the LS pretty aggressively on a regular basis. As an added bonus, mine uses very little oil as well.

i do mobil1 every 2 ls oil cycles in the computer . 5w-20 synthetic and a motorcraft filter.

the computer is set for what, 3k miles?

the computer goes by a combination of time and mileage. i change mine with walmart brand full synthetic and a motorcraft filter as well, and just go by the computer. the oil life said 0 last time and that was about 4500 miles from the last oil change.

I dont have the manual in front of me, but I could have sworn its strictly mileage based at 5k intervals. At least on my 2002 LSE it is. Perhaps it could go off sooner if I drove less than 5k per year, but thats not my situation. Also keep in mind, that it's well known that the MOST engine wear occurs at startup, and the absolute most wear occurs at the first startup after you change your oil. So at least in theory, keeping your quality oil in your car for as long as possible (but also while the oil still has all of its protective and performance properties) is the best for a car.

Combination of mileage and time, 5000k miles or 6 months. Factory Semi-syn with factory filter, $38.00 a pop.

I'll second that one. My local walmart carries motorcraft and i think i get the recommended oem oil and filter for around $25. Aside from the price i dont see any other mobil 1, amsoil, synthetic magic blend with pixie dust actually being any better than the oem motorcraft stuff. I dont want my comments to start a 10 page rant on why those oils are better, just my opinion and preference and 80,000 miles of solid driving in the LS.
