Oil Filter adapter gasket...

I don't know what it's really called but I'm sure you guys know... it's the gasket after the oil filter goin to the block... my ?? is how hard is it to change?... looks like a pain to get it out... I was just wondering cause I need to replace it... this guy at firestone (I know I know.. but they've actually been pretty good to me) said they'd do it for a 150 bucks... including 20 for the part... sounds like a good deal just cause it looks like a PITA... but yeah I was just curious thanks
 
It's a pain in the butt, no doubt.
It's doable though.

If you need the $150, then it's worth the afternoon to do it. There are instructions on the website showing how it's done.

Basically, you remove the plate, replace the gasket, and bolt it back down. It sounds easy, but it's just inaccessible, messy, and the bolts are difficult to access and take off.

It's like many of the repairs on the Mark VIII. It's sort of like the joke about the guy who keeps banging his head against the wall because it feels so good when he stops.
 
Plus, the gasket only cost me $12 from my local ford parts department No reason to give them an extra $158.

that gasket

I had mine replaced by firestone i think (can't remember but pretty sure) and they charged $105. Finally stopped the leak i had for like 2 years. I know i know, but every shop i brought it to couldn't find where the leak was from. Until a guy working on my transmission (aamco) told me there was a gasket. I had them do it and it took quite a while, mainly because I have the biggest offered addco sway bar there and it was difficult for the to get to. The stock sway bar's size would not have been as much as an obstruction. I thought it was worth the money, because the service also included the oil change i needed anyway. It is four bolts that in my opinion are difficult to reach. good luck.
 
I dunno... in this winder climate..
I might pay 150 to have someone else do a oil filter gasket.

sure beats crawling around on the ground and getting snow in the crack of your ass.

Then again, it really depends on how much value 150.00 is to the original poster...

I knocked mine out in about 45 minutes, this was the first time I did one.

If you can knock yours out in 45 minutes, then you might ask your buddy at firestone why he wanted to charge you two hours labor for a 45 minute job.

On a lift, with proper tools a properly trained automotive tech should be able to do this in 30 minutes..

"I" and "untrained" individual floundered thru one in less than an hour.
no lift, no ASE training.. just an ordinary guy with some sockets.
 
so firestone did the gasket? i think i will have them do mine. i cant work on mine in my driveway because im in an apartment complex, they called the police last time when i did my brakes and rotors..... thanks for all the help guys.
 
I never go fast when I'm working on my own cars.... I spend too much time cleaning things and checking over every little thing.... lol
