Octane boost of 87 octane gas, Help?

The low down, Atlanta sux right now with gas. One hour lines to fill up and the only have 87 octane. Has anyone use any octane boost with 87 octane gas, and if so, what kind did you buy? I found a station this morning with 87 and filled up. I had a quarter tank of 93 already in it, so the ride was not to bad. But my next fillup will be all 87 with the boost. So if any of you guys out there have used a Octane Boost, please chime in and give your opions.

The best and most effective octane boosters contain MMT and are in brands like the NOS Octane Boost. Used to use it in my TBSS at the track to keep KR down. Although if you are really that concerned, I would get a 5 gal container of racing fuel from a track or something and do your own mixing as this would provide results that would be cleaner and a relatively comparable cost.
 
Just put in the 87 and don't worry about it. All you lose is some HP until you fill up on the good stuff. The car can handle it with no problem.

Not really. It has been discussed before that it may harm the vehicle. The amount of LS owners here that have reported bad results in the end weight out the ones that felt it was safe so I would just be on the safe side. Buuuuuut that's not something to get into;) .


If it does concern you I agree with MikeG but to my knowledge most of these boosters are garbage anyway.


If you really think gas is that bad down there I would use some seafoam afterwords just to be on the safe side. Wont hurt and chances are you could benefit from it in general.
 
rainjacks I agree and living in Northern Indiana we deal with a lot of water in our gas. I have used boosters but never noticed them doing anything, didn't even get rid of detonation.

I would like to point out that I am not suggesting fully switching to 87 for the rest of the car's life. I am simply saying that for a few weeks it shouldn't be an issue.
 
rain they sell any 104 over by you anywhere? Use to get some in LaPorte and for awhile in Elkhart.:D

IMO I would still consider less than a few weeks being safe.


A few fills maybe as I did it in the past but I have noticed something going on. I never had a major problem just terrible idle and noise. But I don't recommend it at all. You will get crappy millage and for what you are paying for cheap gas you could be making up for by paying the few more cents.


Around here we have plenty of 91+. My second vehicle does not state whether you should use premium or not so the wife uses 87,... even for a vehicle that does not require premium gas I noticed after a bit of time it starts to loose power and ticks and pings.


Anyway what ever the OP feels is the best for him I still say drop in some seafoam when things go back to normal with the gas situation.
 
It is not that we have bad gas, it is that we have a huge shortage of gas. Atlanta is regualted by the EPA and we have 2 blends. A summer blend and a winter blend. The summer blend does not have the sulfer in it to help keep down on the smog. So everywhere else is getting the normal gas, the EPA is making us still use the summer, which now is very low. They are only trucking in 87 octane, so I have to use something to give it a boost. And yes, my engine started stuttering this afternoon after I mixed 93 with 87.
I saw the Nitrous boost and the Lucas. Probable go with the Nitrous unless anyone else out there has a thought.
I have counted today, 35 gas stations with no gas at all. And the 2 that I did find had 20 to 30 cars in line blocking traffic. It is nuts.

I still say use the seafoam, if gas is that short you will be sucking things up from the bottom of the tanks at the pump which aint good.

The stuff really works. And I love Lucas but I really don't feel the fuel additives do to much except clean and lube. I don't know if you will notice any increase in octane.
 
per independent test lab results posted all over google the most common most effective octane boost is the lucas treatment mentioned by nhlsv8, however with one bottle per 10 gallons it raised 93 to 96 lol so still not much of an improvement but it should cut down on detonation more than just running 87
 
I got bad gas once. Pinging and whatnot, so I ran it down to about 1/4 tank then put in 2 bottles of octane booster (Lucas) and filled up with 93 from the station I usually go to. Took care of that.

I hear you on the shortage, its is rediculous here in NC aswell, just about every station is out, as far as i know none have premium, guess I won't be taking the beast out anytime soon.

There is still some in Elkhart. There's a gas station on the South West side near what used to be Pierre Moran Mall. Also, near SR 19 at Yoder's I think they sell it.

Plenty of 94 and 91...and of course the crappy 89, 87....
You guys are just a little cheaper on it then us...LOL

if you guys think octane boosters are garbage than your 90% true...the 10% is
when you fill up your tank and pour in 2 bottles of 104+ maximum and yes
maximum not the original..........
 
Same issue here so I thought I'd chime in and commiserate. ;)

The 87 octane is flowing again here, but it looks like that's all they're bringing in -- I haven't found any premium in days and now I'm down to about 2 gallons! When asked when the good stuff would come in, the guy at the local service station said, "Maybe a couple days... maybe a couple weeks... I have no idea."

I'll try a few miles on the best gas I can find, then try the octane boost if it's too bad...
