I turned the car off for a couple of minutes to drop my girlfriend's tv off for repair, and when I sat to start the car, the car cranked a few times and died while still holding down the key in the start position. I tried again and it cranked a couple times and died. Third and fourth time is a no go. I cycled the gear shifter from P to D and back to P and still nothing. A person who was walking by told me that they witnessed sparks coming out from the bottom of the car when it cranked the first couple times. I opened up the engine bay and saw nothing out of the ordinary. Tried again and still nothing. I am getting power to everything else. Any ideas?

If someone saw sparks, then probably the battery cable to the starter is loose. I'd check that first. Otherwise, there's not much to replacing the starter.

Step one for either replacing the starter or tightening the cable is to disconnect the negative battery terminal.

Perfect. I'll take a look under the car in the morning. Which side of the engine is that diagram referring to?
