Hello everyone, I've read the forums for a while now to get help with stereo and window actuator issues, they've always been quite helpful. This is my first posting. I used to be an avionics technician both in the military and on the civilian side, but I must admit when it comes to cars I'm completely clueless.
I have an overheating problem on my ls. I've read the forums on overheating and even though I've gathered quite a lot of info I wanted to give you guys the symptoms to make sure I'm heading the right way.
I have an ls 2000 v6. My degas bottle got cracked. I took it to the shop and they replaced it without attempting to find out what had caused it to break in the first place.
About two blocks away from home it started overheating again, I could smell like burning antifreeze coming from the vents; Turned the heater on max which made the needle come back to the middle and made it home. Popped the hood and realized the liquid in the degas bottle was basically boiling. I could also hear a boiling sound coming from the engine itself. Called AAA and got the car towed to a different shop. The reservoir got cracked again so they changed it along with the t-stat and the gasket. They said they had inspected the cooling system and that everything appeared to be fine.
I headed on a 380 miles drive back home (from Berkeley CA to Los Angeles) and about 30 miles into the drive the needle started to creep up again I called the shop and they said to turn the heater on and to continue if the needle came back down. It did and my drive went uneventful after that, although I kept the heater on at max. This morning I was gearing up to drain the fluid and bleed the system. Drove to the dealer (3 miles) to get some coolant. I had the ac at max trying to see if it overheated, everything ok. On the way back about 1 mile from my house it started to overheat again; I turned the heater on for about 5 minutes and turned it back off to see if it was trapped air in the system. I went around the block about 5 times and the needle didn't come back up. When I got home I popped the hood and again heard the same boiling sound from the engine. Also inside the car I smelt the same smell again. Does this sound like air in the system? or do I have bigger problems? Thanks a lot everyone and sorry if I wrote a lot, I wanted to give you as many details.
P.S. could you also tell me where the radiator draincock and the pressure relief valve are. Thank you.

Sorry for sounding dumb, but is that the one behind the radiator? if it is than it's working, otherwise could you tell me where to look?

yup, it's your cooling fan that sits behind your radiator. On your car it's hydraulically driven. Could be air in the system, water pump... is your oil good, or milky???

oooohhhh....i had the same problem, but i dont know if it the same cause...when i bought my LS my cooling fan was actually unplugged...it took it a while to actually blow my coolant resovoir...but it happened, i ended up having to take it to the dealership...but yeah, it was unplugged...same problem though...

Hey, thanks for the tips guys. I checked the connection to my fan. It all seems ok. I realized my radiator had tons of crap stuck on it (leaves and other debris) so I carefully took most of it off with my hands and pressure washed the rest. I got the cooling system bled and reserviced hoping to get rid of any air in the system. Seemed ok on the drive home, I'll keep you posted on the progress. Thanks again.

welcome...let us know how the progress goes...i'm learning as i go too with the LS...but this forum is very helpful...some of the people in here know more about the LS than the engineers do...

help me with the same problem

I just joined this forum today, I am having the same problem as newbie. I checked my fan, replaced my thermostat this morning. I smell the antifreeze, come to find out that i have a leak coming from my bleeder valve cap in the middle where you put the hex bit to torque it. Has anyone ever had that problem? also it's running kinda hard, like it's a diesel or something when idling. help please i'm drowning over here.

Hey everyone, here's the progress report, no luck, it's still overheating. So far this is what I've done: replaced degas bottle, new t-stat and gasket. cleaned debris of the radiator, took it to get the system drained, bled and reserviced (with the fancy machine they use at the mechanics shop).
Drove it last night and after about 17 miles the needle started to go up. Turned the heater on for about 5 minutes and after turning it back off the problem didn't come back. Got to where I was going, and on the way back home drove abut 25 miles with no overheating.
Some people tell me to change the water pump. Is that a good next step? Thanks.
