So as of this minute I am installing the k&n typhoon cold air intake. :D
My question is the direction say to disconnect the battery, so that it erases the preprogrammed electronic memories. Do I really need to do this? :shifty:

the new intake will move more air than the car is expecting.
it might mess things up actually.

So I disconnected the battery. Let the car sit for about 15 min. Made sure everything was in place and reconnected. Started her up... And wasn't that surprised. The intake wasn't much louder then stock. Then I hopped I'm my car and took her for a drive..... And :q :q it sounds :q amazing! She sounds completely different and the throttle response is way way better. :D
Hard to beleave a intake can do so much.

Next week 02 LSE spoiler and eye lids. :D

And I know the picture quality isn't the best.

Yup, it's sound great when you get on it!

I’ve been thinking about putting one on my car but I am a bit concerned after installing one on my wife’s ’07 Mountaineer with the 4.6.

It sounded great at full-throttle, but the rest of the time it was just too annoying to put up with.
The intake noise levels with any more that 10% throttle levels were just obnoxious. There was an extremely annoying drone between about 1800 – 2300 rpm which is right where it usually runs at highway speed, so anytime there was a slight incline on the highway where some extra throttle was needed, it would sound like there was a cow giving birth under the hood. After three weeks, I gave up trying to get used to it and put the factory setup back on.

I’ve been in many different cars and trucks with intake kits (K&N as well as others) so I know what they typically with do as far as sound wise, so I’m thinking and hoping that the Mountaineer was just a weird situation.

So on the LS, is it very noticeable all the time or is it like most cars with intake kits where it only gets loud when at full-throttle?
Any annoying droning under “normal” driving situations?

I would check that Mountaineer for something strange: an obstruction, loose connection, etc. It should not sound like that. I did not know they were making intakes for the 06-10 Explorers.

That was my first thought as well but I checked and double checked and couldn't find anything wrong.

After re-installing the stock set-up, and listening carefully, all of the droning is still there although is a lot....and I mean a lot quieter. So I'm sure that the Ford NVH engineers must have put a lot of effort into designing the air intake muffler for this thing.

That definitely could be; they put a lot of bottle-necks in their intakes, and there must be a reason. If it were me, I would hang on to the intake until I could get an exhaust on there, then see if those two play nice together. I did the intake and exhaust at the same time on my '02, and I am very pleased with the results.
