need help with door problem, door hinge?

I am attaching a pic of the problem. It a small hinge on the drivers side door. the one side is attached to the car and the other go inside the door. is it just to stop the door from opening to far? The lower tab broke off so it is only attached at the top and i dont think for long. Does anyone know how to fix this or even what it is called? i dont even know what its function is. Thanks, Mac

It is called a door check. It's purpose is to not allow the door to extend too far when opened. It is made of thin metal at the end where it bolts to the post, so it wouldnt hold up very well to being welded. Your safest bet would be to replace it.
