need help: first speding ticket

I'll have to disagree here on type vs type. I have a Cobra (9600 I think) in my truck (about $100) but it doesn't have near the range as the Bel Pro RX65 that is in my LS. I dunno, maybe Uniden is better than Cobra. I've tested my Bel against the speed boxes that are setup on the highway. I pick it up from a little under 5 miles and it is behind a hill and curve. The Bel also keeps reading it for about 2 miles once I pass it. The Bels go for about $200 on ebay. It is basically the same as the escort passport 8500 X50. But with this guys luck I would recommend just slowing down. I will agree that most driving will get by with the $100 Wal-Mart detector.

why would you want a radar detector that starts beeping at you 5 miles from the threat?? at what point would it not be beeping then. you might as well just turn it off and drive the speed limit all the time. that is like the radar detector beeping when you turn you car on, saying " better slow down now because i sense radar out there somewhere." i think i will take a radar detector that warns me about 3/4 to a mile away from a threat so i dont go slow all day.

5 miles is pretty insane. You can only recognize a car within about 300 yards. One thing you need to keep in mind, the cop running radar is going to have to be within that 300 yards to even know which vehicle is returning the excessive speed, unless your the only car on the road for miles and miles. Even if your going 75 and everyone else around you is doing 65 the cop is going to have within 100 yards to make a positive ID. I'd think that 5 mile range would make you alittle paranoid. I guess you have to actually sit in a patrol car behind a radar gun to understand its limits.

The closer you get the more it beeps. You get used it and learn when to actually slow down. Personally I like as much warning as possible. Also the range is important on how fast you intend to drive. The faster you go the more time and distance is required to slow down. That is why I agreed with FLa02LS that 99% of drivers don't need that kind of warning range. But if you like to cruise at 100 in 60 zones, then you'll want the time/distance to slow down. I don't usually drive that fast, but it is nice to be warned if I do. Also the range might not be quite as good on a patrol radar. I was measuring my distance on one of the stationary radars that tell you how fast your going. They may be broadcasting stronger radar then your average cop.

I can tell you for a fact that at 100 mph in a 60 any cop NOT running radar will be all over you. By the time you see them...they've seen you, and its extremely obvious when you slam on your brakes at that speed. They dont need a clocked speed, its called "Violation of a traffic control device".... namely the speed limit sign. Good luck though.

I was pulled over last night for what hte state trooper claimed was 81 in a 65. I only think i was doing about 75 at the most. Being as i am only 17 and this is my first ticket i have to go to court. Is there anytihng that i should know about going to court? or what is going to happen at court? Is there any way to get out of hte ticket?

The thing is was pulled over for the first time just 5 minutes before that for illegal tint and going through a yellow light. The town officer let me go with a warning. then I got onto the highway and was the pulled over once again. It just wasnt my day. If anyone has any advice its greatly appreciated.

Any the final thing is: What is a good radar detector?

Sorry for the long post
Why don't you just pay the ticket? I don't understand how many people have posted in the past stating they got a speeding ticket or a tint ticket or got pulled over for doing nothing and want out of it. Everytime I have gotten pulled over.....I pay the ticket (which i deserved) and am done with it. The only way to avoid getting pulled over is to not drive at a speed or illegal tint that is going to draw attention to yourself. For instance, I haven't gotten a speeding ticket since 2003 and the reason for that is I don't drive more than 7-10 mph over the limit anymore and I don't have illegal tint on my car.

I don't mean to be preaching, but if you want legal advice.......speak with a lawyer who knows what is going on as opposed to people arguing over various state laws that may or may not be the same as in your state. In Iowa, if you get pulled over, they will have your complete driving record because I have heard it read back to me when I had to sit in a cop car while the cop was running my information.

hey guys in my first post I was just saying that I noticed a difference type for type. If you don'twant that kind of warning then don't buy that kind of radar detector. Personally I like the warning. I picked up real quick with it when to slow down or not based on the intesity of the beeps. As for the 100mph that was an example, maybe an unrealistic one, but at the least an example. Sorry if I mislead you all.

I dont see myself turning to a web forum for legal advice either. And i also have never tried to weasel my way out of a ticket. I have had one speeding ticket for going 76 in a 45. The trooper kept trying to get an answer out of me as to why i was going that fast... i didnt have one. I was just speeding. Sorry. Some people are just babies about stuff. Cant accept responsibility for their actions and of course its the cops fault. I love the part about being told 81 in a 65, yet he "thinks" its was only 75...at most. Ok. I think it was his "Oh Sh!t" braking that took him from 81 to 75. Keep in mind people that going 66 in a 65 is by law speeding. There is no grey area and no +/- allowance.
