Hello all,
First, let's start off by saying that I have a 2001 LS V8 automatic with 103,000 miles. I've been through the ringer with the usual window regulators VCG, coils etc. The most recent repairs were the 2 rear hub bearings which I replaced 8 weeks apart. All was quiet as a church mouse, but in the past 2 weeks, a new whining sound started again. Owning this car is like an adventure, I never know what to expect. This time it's the rear end for certain. It sounds like the ring and pinion or the left hand side of the carrier bearing but not 100% sure. The driveshaft universal and the center support bearing are fine. I researched the parts for a total rebuild and it comes out to around $500, that's the discounted price. I figured that once I drop the rear end, I might as well do a total rebuild.
I've rebuilt solid rear ends before, so I'm familiar with what needs to be done, but this 2 piece driveshaft is a bit different in design.
If anyone has done this job before, I would appreciate some information as to any special tools that are necessary or anything you could share.
