Ok...I'm installing a Pioneer AVIC-Z1 into an 01 LS8 Sport with Alpine CD-6. My wiring diagrams just flat suck to say the least. Especially the connector diagrams.

My questions... They show a center speaker amp. Is this to control the two console speakers only? I would assume you lose these in this conversion?

My diagrams show that the 01 Sport does NOT have a subwoofer amp or speakers. Is this correct?

I assume there is a speed sensor wire at the radio like all Ford speed sensitive radios.

I am using a PAC-PS1 steering wheel button module. So I should be able to retain all those features.

Any other ideas or advice you could add would be greatly appreciated. We are not adding any aftermarket amps...just retaining the factory speaker set up as much as possible. Anyway, that's the plan.

On the 2nd gen LSes, at least, the center imaging amp only handles the console speakers. I would expect the same to be true of the 1st gen.

AFAIK, you are connect, and the 1st gen Sports deleted the subs & sub amp.

The speed sensor wire is not at the radio. Do a search because i have answered this question atleast 5 or 6 times. for the steering wheel control, that is at the steering wheel harness. This has also been answered a lot.

The wiring diagrams I do have (as poor as they are) confirm there is a steering wheel button input wire at the radio. There has to be. That's where you tap into it for the SWI-PS1 module. That's how I did it on my 03 Aviator and how PAC recommends it. I'll let you know what I find on the VSS wire.

This is what I've found out so far. The steering wheel button input into the radio is pin 14 on the 20 pin connector (C240A) Later models will have a 24 pin connector I believe. (Radio with SAT button)

There indeed is a VSS signal at the radio. However, it is carried on the data bus line and I know of no way to capture that signal off that feed. Therefore, I am going to capture it at the ECM instead. It's pin 26 in connector C175B. That's the signal that's generated from the transmission output shaft and looks to be the signal the ECM and speedometer uses for vehicle speed.

In order to use the console speakers, I need to have an umamplified signal that I can send from my new radio to the center amp...then turn the amp on with the amp switch in the radio. I actually may have this on the AVIC-Z1...but I believe it's through RCA's. So a little bit of adapting may be necessary to retain those.

I think I'm getting this down. Now, I need to determine whether or not the car has an amplifier for the antenna. I know the Aviator did...and I see it on newer LS's. But nothing is showing in the diagrams for the 01.
