The Lincoln Mark VIII has passed. She made it to 250,069 miles. The official cause is a cracked head.

She rolled over the one quarter of a million miles on Christmas day 2007. My wife and I memorialized the occasion by taking some pictures of the odometer at the magical 250k mark. One December 26th at 8:50 am on Route 33 in Freehold, NJ while traveling about 40 MPH she shot the #4 spark plug out of the engine. She had 250,068 miles at that point. We (a AAA flat bed) brought her into the intensive care unit (Belmar Auto), where she spent the next 3-days. The mechanics, determined to bring her back, re-threaded the head to accept a new spark plug. The re-thread was successful but because the head was cracked the plug slipped out again. With barely any compression and 7-cylinders firing I drove her back home from the shop and rolled her over to 250,069 miles. She stayed running in the driveway with a horrible miss, loud tapping and air/compression blowing out of the open spark plug hole.

Friends came by to hear her last rumblings and console me.

I purchased my 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII in December of 1996 with 24,500 miles on her. She was born in October 1992. When I first saw the Mark VIII in 1992 I had to have one. The combination of almost perfect body lines, luxury, self leveling air suspension, and of course the powerful 280 horsepower, 32-valve, dual over head cam, 4.6 liter, V8 engine made it an ideal car for me. Over the years of happy ownership she ran a best of 14.3@97 MPH down the quarter mile, ran hard all the way up to her governed top speed of 130 MPH, she had many victories (and some losses) off stop light drags, and ripped off countless smoky burn-outs. I had it painted, changed rims twice, changed the front seats, had the motor replace 4-times (5-total motors) under warranty, had the tranny rebuilt twice, pulled out the air suspension at 200k miles and many, many, many other parts replaced.

I've been visiting this Mark VIII message board, its predecessor, and the 'other' Mark VIII boards for a long, long time, i think since 1998?! The original message board was Carcus's land shark and Mark VIII page.

I have no idea how Tommy's mark made it to 350,000 miles before he replaced the drive train.

I'll most likely replace my busted Mark VIII with another, but it won't be the same, as I doubt I'll have it for 11-years or drive it for 226,000 miles. I've got an 02 Vette as my 'nice' car now.

R.I.P. dude...got a 94 mark viii with 169km on her...soon to be 170km...bot her in march of 2006 sitting almost frame to the ground due to airride being f**ked sat in my garage till june 2007 when i got the airride redone to suit my taste...normal oil leak from the oilpan but oils cheap and labours expensive...obvious choice...runs great would no other car as soon as i saw her at a dealership across from my highschool planted to the ground i new thas what i wanted...sorry to hear about your loss dude...

Why are you getting rid of it, because of a head issue. Just replace the head or get a junkyard engine. Is there something else?

I have no idea how Tommy's mark made it to 350,000 miles before he replaced the drive train.

I can't believe you'd blame your engine and the car for a 'loose' spark plug. Shame on you. The car would still be running and you'd be a happy camper had only that #7 cylinder seen the proper torque specs for the plug.

I think you should bury the plug as I am sure it tried it's hardest not to be jettisoned and killed. Just think of the torture that plug had to endure. First it starts to loosen, then hot gases run past it and sears it's body, creating 3rd degree burns. Then it finally tires and loses it's grip and is subsequently shot out of it's home like a used tampon is pulled from it's nest.

Oh the horror.

May the 7th cylinder plug rest in peace.:D

You guys are such poet's!

That is not a good excuse to kill the mark, there is a blown motor in a yard over here for 150 bucks I can get the head off for you if you want?

My new one was left for dead because of a blown tranny and bad paint, 189,000 bah! I say! There is plenty of life left in her, plus I have two spare motors if this one goes.

My #6 shot out on my 96. I Thread-Serted all 8. Problem solved and stronger than stock.

Did they use a proper Thread-Sert or just try to re-thread??

Damn Ken. Sorry to hear that. It was a good ride, very fun car and one of the VERY first stockers in the 14.6's and then 14.30's!! RIP!

Thanks for all the replies and condolences.

To answer some of the above questions…….
I changed all the plugs on the current engine. The plug that shot out was in the car for over 20,000 miles, so I doubt I didn’t torque it properly……..but it is possible. I probably changed the plugs 8 or 10 times on this car. The shop that worked on the car did try and re-thread the head(?), but it was unsuccesful.

I ‘could’ replace the head or I 'could' get a new engine but the rest of the car is tired and it wouldn't be worth it……..the rest of the car has 250,000 miles on it too.

The same day I lost the plug I lost 50% of my braking (had to push the pedal down ½ way before it grabbed). The day I drove it from the shop to my house I had to push the brake 7/8 of the way down before the brakes grabbed. It had fluid, so most likely it was a master cylinder.

It also has barely working windshield wipers, crappy radio, leaking sunroof, no abs/traction control, really bad headlights, tranny that didn’t shift right at full throttle, paint from a re-paint wasn’t holding up anymore, doors freeze shut in the winter, check engine light came on after driving hard or driving over 1-hour, etc, etc.

So, in other words, it would have taken a lot to get her running right and with 250k miles, she’s done.

I pushed it to make her run as long as she did. I’ve replaced almost everything! The steering wheel and back seat are original :)

I had one of the fastest stock Mark VIII’s with a 14.6@97mph, bone stock!! She got down to 14.3@97MPH with only an exhaust (LMS’s cat back system). Even last spring with over 230,000 on the clock she still did a 14.5!! Drag racing with Geno and the other Mark VIII’s was always a blast. For those that don’t remember, my car was painted at the same place Geno painted his purple Mark VIII…………Terminviiior.

I do think I found another Mark VIII. I’m going to look at it this weekend…..but I doubt I’ll own it for 11-years and 225,000 miles.

I'll give ya 90.00 for it, Final offer.

Hope everything I own makes it to a quarter million miles.

Thanks for all the replies and condolences.

Do you have a link for this 98 LSC? Or can you tell me some details? I've searched all the online places.

The Mark VIII I'm going to look at this weekend isn't even in NJ.

Thanks,
Ken

I'll sell you my 96 lsc for $1,000,000,000.00...

its worth it.. trust me..ask Geno

Similarly I've found a 1993 Mark VIII with 69k miles for $11,000 and a 1998 LSC with similar mileage for $22,000. Not sure what they are smoking? I off course keep seeing that Collector's Edition with 200 miles for $35k, but I have no idea what that is really worth?

I do think I've found my next mark.........I'll know tomorrow!!

Ken

I want your engine block!!! If you're willing to part with it, PM me!!!
