My car dies every now and then while driving? It has happened 2 times now,I turn on to my street and all of a sudden it feels like I am getting no gas and it dies. The last time I put it in neutral and turned the key, starter worked but no start, then I pushed on the gas pedal while cranking and it started and I made it to my driveway. It starts right back up like there is nothing wrong. Anybody got and ideas?

Fuel pump.

I was afraid I would hear that. I have to drop gas tank right? This also started after I started noticing after filling tank really full, that there was fuel dripping off the evaporator tray. Any connection?
Any place to buy and brand recommended for a gen 2? This is an everyday driver, not a race car.

My statement was a guess at the problem based on what you posted. Wait for others to respond with their own guesses before you start spending money.

Remember I posted thies about a week or two ago about my evaporator tray dripping fuel. If this were the case, would it cause it to die?
Max from Ford replied with this:
"Cannisters should last a lifetime. Unless of course you overfill the tank and keep saturating them with "liquid" then the have to be replaced. Once the raw gas get in there they are toast. The car can also run rich because of it sending raw vapors, and sometimes liquid gas to the induction system through the vapor lines."

could be a sticking idle air bypass valve.
when you are turning,is your foot completely off the throttle? (ie. throttle blade closed)

my theory is based on the fact that you had to step on the gas to get it started. since you have multiport efi,the only thing this does is opens the throttle blade for air to pass by,which is the job of the idle air bypass.
just a thought!

I guess IAC also. Its suppose to, for the most part, compensate for load on the engine from steering, AC, etc.

By the way, its a silver canister like object and the top center of the intake, assuming you have a Gen II as pictured in your avatar.

I recently cleaned it and it was working great. I guess one more cleaning, and then if that doesn't do it, replace?
Thanks for the ideas.

i have cleaned them before only to have the problem return. best bet is to clean again to see if that makes a difference before buying another, also clean the orifice in the throttlebody as well. if the cleaning makes a difference then you most likely found the problem and should consider buying a new one. also, after the cleaning, lube lighty with wd40 or a good penetrating oil.

Ya, cleaning may help pin point the problem but as Warlock said its never a long term fix. Just be glad you can get to yours easily, not so easy for 96 down - well expect for mine :P

before you go thru all that, with the filter, check your coil packs, same thing happened to me, and everyone said the same thing, and turns out three coil packs were bad!

My experience with one bad coil pack, has been a really rough running engine. I can't imagine more than one?

Coils packs? Coils :)

Okay I had Advance auto parts read my codes and here is what i got:
P1518 idle Speed control and PO305 or maybe it is P 0305 Cylinder 5 misfired. Now I need to know looking at engine from radiator which is cylinder number 5 and I will replace the Coil pack.

5 should be right front. Easy to get to!

Passenger side is 1,2,3,4 from forward back.
Drivers side is 5,6,7,8, from forward back.

Glad Ford kept SOMETHING simple.

Also you could move that coil to a new spot to see if the code follows, but if you take it out you may fine oil or a torn boot. Usually the coils last a LONG time and its the affordable boot that fails.

Hmnn, I replaced that one like a month ago. I have two more in reserve I had bought from 3 originally from Jaime, they were used but suppose to be good?

You also may want to check the boots out as well for any cracking. This is a maintance type issue and you may need to purchase a new set of boots. Check Advamce for these also.

Any idea what these codes are P 1518 and P 0305?
I replaced the number 5 coil pak, drivers side front. I removed the IAC, shot it full several times with carb cleaner and then turned it over with carb cleaner in it, with holes up several times. Then removed it again and shot it full of carb cleaner and the shook it out well. Then used lube one lube oil from a pump bottle then hooked it up and ran it a few times, then dumped it out and then screwed it back down. I have no idea if it is fixed, I ran it in first gear up to 6
6000 RPM with no trouble. I have odrered a new IAC from Max to be safe, I have 166,000 miles on original IAC. So why not?
Any help on the codes I sent unless that is what these are?

Thanks Unity for your info. I had a nice stream of oil down one side of the boot. I swapped out the entire coil and boot with the extra I have on hand. It was the same coil as before, because these coil paks I got from Jaime, have a pink sticker on the very top of them.

I recently cleaned it

Cleaning them does more harm than good.

Ford does not recommend cldeaning them. In fact, I think there is even a sticker that says, "Do Not Clean". Same goes for the throttle body. They have a coating on the IAC and the throttle body opening.

And on a Gen 2, the thing is right there and a 2 minute job to replace.

Penny wise, dollar foolish applies here.

FWIW, I think you might want to do a fuel pressure test on that fuel pump. Sounds like the pump is on the way out.

Thanks Monster, I have ordered a new IAC from Max. If that and the coil pak change does not fix it, I will get a pressure check, however I was able to accelerate to 6000 RPM in low with no hesitation now.

If my car was doing stupid crap like that and I wasn't' 100% sure on the maintenance history I would give it a full tune up.... who knows otherwise.
