Only when I turn the heater on, I have a very strong musty smell coming out. I thought the cabin filter was wet or had water behind it. Dry and clean. Had one guy I work with say that its the heater core, happened to his VW passat. The smell is musty not sweet/coolant smell. It was fine for the first 2 weeks I bought the car, then for two weeks now, very strong like old/moldy smell. Dealer said the ac/heat vent needs deoderized. To turn heater on full blast and spray half can of lysol in the cabin air filter vent and leave run for 10 or so min. Any thoughts?

mine has the same smell and i dont have a clue i hope someone can help

You might want to remove the cabin filter then spray, and when it is time to replace cabin filter get a charcoal or carbon impregnated filter, this will help with odors. There are commercial sprays but Lysol will work just as well and is cheaper and will kill the mold.

Well, its an '06 with 20,000 miles on it. Lysol woud be an ease of mind if that fixes it. and If I do the lysol, I would have taken the filter out, I dont want to smell that all the time. But Im more concered with the heater core.

Very typical to have some mold grow in the ductwork of a car with heat and A/C. Turn blower on high before spraying Lysol. Don't flood it!

If it's an '06 ith 20k, I would venture to say that's not the problem.

depends on the environment... it could be the problem. Not as likely, but... the Lysol is a $4 fix/test...

That should work.

If not you should call around to a few detail shops and ask if they have an Ozone machine and how much they charge for a treatment.
