I took a road trip this past weekend. And got great mpg's.

And i was wondering what kind of mpg's everyone was getting.

I got a hand calculated 24 mpg's running. Mid grade 87.

Why are you running 87? That stuff is for Kia's, the DOHC is built to run higher octane.

Stock I got 28, 21 with the 3.73:1 .

My 93 averages like 15-16, all city driving. I need to dig deeper and see if I can't boost that number just a tad bit.

My 97 says Premium Recommended. I did a couple of tanks of 87 to get a baseline mpg and drivability, and won't run anything but 91 octane (I can't get 93 unless I go to a specialty gas station).
I average 17~17.3 with strictly city driving, a series of 1/8 mile runs with a little cruising in between. I drive it pretty hard. I only averaged 22 in a Nissan Versa doing the same drive.

Octane recommendation
Your vehicle is designed to use premium gasoline for optimum performance with an (R+M)/2 octane rating of 91 or higher. Gasolines with lower octane ratings can be used, but performance and fuel economy may decrease. We do not recommend gasolines labeled as “premium” in high altitude areas that are sold with octane ratings less than 91.

I haven't had it on the interstate often enough to get a good idea on that, plus I tend to push it pretty hard, so I doubt I can get anything over 22-23 mpg. For me it is cheaper to use 91 than to use 87 octane. I get way better mileage with 91, and if 91 is only 20-28 cents a gallon more it is worth it. Sometimes 91 lags behind 87 in going down.

I've been digging through this forum looking for modifications that could be done for MPG & high mileage. I know the Jmod will preserve the tranny a little bit longer (correct me if Im wrong). But not sure if there's something that can be done to add MPG.(besides keeping your foot out of it)

16 city, 24 highway with my 3.73 car.
little less with 4.10 car.
i buy the cheap stuff.

with the weight and tall gearing of a stock car, 15-17 is about all you'll realistically see in town. good for running down the highway though.
you don't lose much/any city mpg with gears cuz the engine is having such an easier time getting the car moving from a stop.
or at least i didn't lose any city MPG.

Cheap stuff here last 15 years...24 mpg everyday...premium is for people that like to waste money...I also use on sale oil and filter....210K and drives cool, straight and normal...:)

I took my 95 for a ride and I'm concerened. On the same trip, 40 miles each way, all freeway, I got 28 mpg going, and 29mpg coming back. This time it was 22mpg going, and 23mpg coming back. All new stuff, plugs, wires, tires, etc. Runs smooth and strong. Could winter gas make that much difference? My 97 avg has always been19-21mpg. It's down around 16-18. I do the #s by hand, and they match the car electronics. Always 93, with a splash of sea foam every now and then to help with moisture. The 1st of the month the gas changes back to summer time use. Hope to see a difference.

If you haven't ran 91+ in a while I suggest you try it again. I can't imagine driving around a sluggish turd for 15 years. And don't tell us it has plenty of pep on 87, you've just gotten used to it. :)

I've switched between 89/91+ and ran 89 pretty much all last year. I noticed an immediate difference once I switched to 91+, runs better, higher mpg and has some umph w/o sounding like it wants to explode.

I average 18.5-19mpg on my daily commute of 95% city driving. If it was all city with lots of stop n go I'd imagine it would be closer to 16 or 17. I get 26+ on the hw @ 75~mph.

Winter gas will net you better gas mileage if you take out the temperature difference between summer and winte.
In summer they add more ethanol and ethanol requires about 30% more volume to burn to equal to straight gas.

Get a Base Models differential, don't get gas in the hot part of the day, Never get gas when the Tanker is adding fuel to the stations reserves, change fuel and air filter regularly, make sure tires are properly inflated, makes sure brake calipers arent dragging, take all the junk out of the trunk, only drive down-hill

Nothing sluggish about this turd. I'm 51 and don't need to race around anymore, but it'll still get a second gear scratch if need be. Have tried premo before, it's just a waste of money. Also when I do all hwy driving it gets 32 mpg. around town 24 easy.

On 87 :shifty: No amount of sane driving will net you 24mpg around town and 32 hwy. That's mid-size 4cyl territory.

Get a Base Models differential

price difference will take too long to pay off.

don't get gas in the hot part of the day

tanks are underground. underground temps are constant. that's total BS.

Never get gas when the Tanker is adding fuel to the stations reserves

the underground tanks have very tight micron filters. a filter is cheaper than a lawsuit. they know this.

change fuel and air filter regularly

ahh, finally, some good advice.

make sure tires are properly inflated

2/5! your average is improving!

makes sure brake calipers arent dragging

now this is one that gets overlooked. +1

take all the junk out of the trunk

also good. except for a spare and a first aid kit. but that's not what i call "junk" either.

only drive down-hill

uh, ok sure.

Price difference for a Base gear set?? Really.. I scored a FRPP built 3:73 w/ TL for $100 (came from "The Grey Ghost) and installed it myself, plus Royal Purple (2 bottles @ 19.95ea)
Hit up a PnP and they are pretty cheap, and it doesn't take a brain surgeon to turn bolts

Also, if you're going to pick my posts apart and rate them, learn to count. I gave 8 tips, not 5

$100 buys you plenty of gas. especially when i expect your fuel mileage difference to be negligible.
going down about 4 ratios hasn't impacted my mileage incredibly. i doubt going up 1 will have an incredible change either.

oh, and your final rating would be 4/8 then.
i do agree with the weight and general maintenance. as i mentioned above.

If you're using 91/93 Oct, $100 won't fill the tank 2 times.

And not to be a total aas, but the car is a Luxury Sport Coupé... Luxury...Sport... Cmon! Say it with me... LUXURY....SPORT..

MPG shouldn't be a concern for an owner of a car of this caliber. Getting a 4-banger would be better for those with shallow pockets, or a motorcycle, they get GREAT milage and you never have to worry about door dings

Spree: No Sir, you're not getting 30+mpg, stop reading the Instant MPG. If I do that, I can hit 70mph and throw it in Neutral down a hill and get 99mpg all day long

changing your driving habits will have more of an effect on your mileage than the 6% gearing difference will.
and that's assuming he has an LSC where putting in base gears will even make a difference.
if he already has a base, and he has to hunt down 2.73s and have them set up and installed, well now that's more than 2 tanks of fuel.
