I have recently blown up my 02 ls8 and I have bought a used motor. I just was looking to see if it has to come out the botom with the trans attached or if I can lift it out the top. If it will come out the top, I can do it myself. If not about how much has the labor been to do the job?

a friend of mine had one done ,... 2000 for new block 4000+ for labor. but yours being a complete motor labor should not be as much....

droping the motor out the bottom is not an option in my garage. If thats the way I HAVE to do it then i will have to have some one do it

Anything's possible but the car was designed to have the engine/trans come out the bottom. Much easier that way.

Its supposed to come out the bottom, but if you can get everything out of the way there should be enough room to pull it from the top. You'll have to move a LOT of stuff though.

if you come out the top your going to have to remove trans from engine... enigne sits to far back in the engine bay to remove engine and trans out the top...

Had mine replaced last year (almost exactly a year ago) and they mechanic lifted it from the top. We argued a lot over dropping it from the bottom or not, but he was able to pull it from the top. I still say it's better to drop it from the bottom though. I knew the shop owner so I made off well with the labor under $500. A lot of people don't want to do this but, ask the mechanic's at the Lincoln dealership. Some dealerships actually let the mechanics work on their own projects when they're off the clock. I know the dealership quoted me a few thousand dollars to do the same thing.

Make sure you get a good motor too. I got some good advice on this and had to wait a lot longer than expected but I found the perfect used motor - very low mileage, still in the vehicle an running (rear & side damage). Every motor I looked at the yards was lied about particularly on it's mileage and condition. The only way to tell is to see it in the donor vehicle running. Carfax every motor you look at. Seriously, I looked at over 20 motors - every last one of them lied severely about it's mileage and condition (floods, fires, major front-end damage - etc). They change their story real quick when you mention you've carfaxed the engine's vin.

When the LS was built the motor went in from the top. So it is possible. I don't have any clue about ease.
