I had bought this MERCON V some months ago at the dealership as I wanted MOTORCRAFT fluid.

I had intended on replacing both the Engine cooling fan fluid & Power Steering fluid with it.

I'm pretty sure I asked for the ATF as it call for it in the OM but the Parts Department passed me this instead,
I don't recall the entire conversation ... but do you LVC'ers have any idea if it's alright to use instead of the ATF ?

It does say Automatic Transmission fluid on it but it's called MERCON V instead of MERCON ATF.

same thing ?

I don't understand the question. Mercon V is ATF, a particular kind of ATF. It's the exact ATF that the manual calls for the cooling fan, the power steering, and the transmission.

Mercon = the older fluid, no longer made.
Mercon V = the new, better, synthetic fluid.
There is a TSB calling out the change from Mercon to Mercon V for the older cars where the manuals were printed before Mercon was discontinued.

Sorry Joe, my little mind just couldn't get around the fact that the first GEN OM calls out MERCON ATF.
and I was sold MERCON V ... after googling for a bit ... yup, improved approved synthetic fluid.
although I did find something explaining that regular MERCON was more slippery than the V.

MERCON ATF vs MERCON V ATF.

got it .. got it, sorry, me so blonde.
just get so nervous with all these precious fluids in this thing.
