Had my car out to the track for the first time today. Hadn't planned on going but it was in the low 60's and Mooresville Dragway opens on Saturdays in the winter if the temp is 50 or better. Neat little 1/8 mile track. $15.00 Test and Tune. Not the most optimum conditions. Track was slick and it was mostly a handfull of cars running on street tires. I also was running on an almost full tank of gas. I did remove the spare and jack but I was still hauling around quite a bit of extra weight. Overall I'm still pretty happy. My best time came with adjusting the timing +1 degree from 2,000-8,000 and adjusting the shift pressure +20% on all shifts over ILLS track tune that he sent me. This was also running the car hot. I tried launching everywhere from off idle to 2,000 rpm. Had traction problems all day. Heating the s**t out of the tires definately helped.

I tried letting the car cool down for almost an hour but that turned into my worst run of the day. Sun was going down and the track surface temps were cooling off. Car got sideways on me on launch, backed out of it and she broke loose again when I got back on her. Called it a day after that. With 1/8 tank of gas, better track conditions and some more seat time I think 14.2's are easily doable.

now i remember your car. are you still going to get the lincoln center caps?
 
9.395 on the 19s?...very nice. If not still a good time, should be a very high 14.4-low 14.5 in the 1/4mile around 98mph.
 
Hey Rick I am glad to see that tune I made for you is treating you well. Your 1/8 mile run's would translate easily into a 14.4 ET in the 1/4 mile. You had a real good 60' (for a Lincoln LS) with that one run you posted.

Very nice considering that was his first time with that car at the track. If he was running that car with the 19's on it then I would say he easily has 14.2's in it on stocker wheels... Possibly a 14.1 if he continues to drive that well. I am really curious to see what rims and tires he was running.

No offense but the center caps have been pretty low on the priority list. I have test fitted the 2 9/16" black and chrome SVT caps that fit the AFS style Cobra wheels and they will work fine. Just need to order some when I get around to it. As far as lowering the car goes....I may just leave it like it is. In person it doesn't look bad at all, looks factory actually and I like to be able to drive it without the constant worry of tearing up the front end on curbs and speed bumps. My roomate drives it also and as much as I love her she will never be as carefull as I am. When the tires wear out I may just go to a 245/40/19 in front and a 275/35/19 in the rear. Depending on need I may even go bigger in the rear. There is easily room for a 295/30/19 and 255/35/19 package if it's not lowered. Before this starts an argument...trust me there is plenty of room. When we measured the wheels before mounting them they actually came out a little off from the advertised specs. Advertsized was 19 x 8.5 and 19 x 10 with a 52mm offset. What they really are is 19 x hair under 9 52mm offset and 19 x hair under 11 with a 48 mm offset. If the rears were actually 52mm as advertised a 305/30/19 may even fit at stock ride height. As it is 295's will easily work. All of this is with future mods in mind. If I go ILLS route with the remote mount Turbo or a Progressive NOS setup the extra rubber will be a big help.
 
For ILLS.....Robert all of the runs were on my 19's. I know they are heavier than my stockers but the combination of much stickier/wider rubber and slightly lower gearing due to the smaller diameter offsets this a little. Nitto 555's are very sticky when heated and are closer to a race rubber compound than most street tires. Mates well with the race rubber on a well prepped pad. Problem was all of the guys running hard compound street tires were ripping big gouges out of the surface. Made launching very tricky. My best run came after staging behind a Pro Mod car who made a couple of very nice full burns down the launch pad prior to his run. As it is I can effortlessly burn the 275's off if I brake torque it and it evenly spins both tires 95% of the time even without a LSD. The only time I really miss a LSD is powering out of corners. Now a Turbo or 100hp NOS Shot will change that for sure.

While this is my first time out with this car and my first time at this track, it's not my first time driving. I have been around racing my whole life. Started with my parents and uncles cars when I was little and then on to my own when I was older. I have owned, built and raced an 11 second '69 GTX, 12 second '66 Stang, 13 second 91 MK VII LSE, couple of 12 second fox body Stangs, an SCCA C/P 87 Stang, Race spec '60 Austin Healey "Bugeye" Sprite, partially restored '60 B/FX altered wheelbase Falcon, Sleeper 150+ mph '77 Chevy Caprice Classic and a few more that I'll think of later. Then there are all of my friends cars I've helped with over the years and I've been working with Nascar for the last couple of seasons to top it off. Not bragging...just laying down a baseline so you all know it's not my first go around.

All in all I was very happy with the car. I made 9 runs. Trying different ways of launching and shifting the car and all but my last run were 2.2 60' and 75mph or better. Extremely consistent. I just need to get my feel for the tree back and learn how this car reacts to get my R/T's down. With 1/8 tank and good track conditions I think I could hit 14.2's on the 19's. Definately on the stockers with some sicky rubber.

All that being said...How do you all launch your LS's? I would love to be able to launch at 2,200 pm but all she does is is spin. Off idle she grabs, bogs and sometimes breaks loose 5'-10' out. Was doing a lot of back pedaling yesterday.
 
I actually find heating the tires kills my times and so does stalling the converter to much. I put her against the brake to 1000-1200 never more than 1500. I have ran my LS over 150 passes so its pretty tested. Sounds like your track is quite slick thou, I have little traction issues with the stockers. 60's under 2.150 are pretty common for me with bests being 2.12s. I have a Gen1 and the throttle cable does help.

I haven't made any passes on my 4.10s yet...technique may change.

On 19s thats a great time and a good 60'. If you can hit 9.2/14.2 on those I'd pull them for the stockers just to try and hit a 14.0....but thats just me:)
 
What tires are you running? From experience most street tires work better with just a quick dry hop to clean them off. Street compounds get very greasy when overheated, especially when in contact with race rubber on the pad. That being said the Nitto's are in a different class, being much closer to a competion compound tire. They respond very well to heat. I and friends have run them for years. Probably the best sticky street tire for all around use on Stang's, Vette's, Camaro's etc. Interesting that you launch best at 1,000 rpm. Still ran 2.2XX 60' times like that but she bogs. Any thoughts as to why you are slower with higher launch rpm? When I tried all I did was spin but still ran 2.2's. With traction 2.1-2.0's should be easy and it would help get the motor up into the power band quicker. Never driven a Gen1 but maybe the TBW changes things a little bit? Robert, any thoughts on this?

I'm assuming that Great Lakes Dragway is where you run? That was my home track for years until RT. 66 opened. Lot's of fond and not so fond memories of that place. One of the most fun and crappiest tracks I've ever been to. I can't wait until Bruton Smith's new Dragstrip at Lowe's Motor Speedway opens in Sept. Supposed to be a Texas Motor Speedway/ RT. 66 Clone. May end up being the fastest track in the country and it's only 10 minutes from my house!

Tires are the stock Michilins that come on sport models. Smashing the pedal will spin them but I have gotten rather good with the light brake rev and smooth push to the floor. I agree Nittos are likely very different and also that they stick, I have them on my 20s for summer and also had them on another vehicle. I likely wouldn't heat them anyway as by not smashing the pedal I'm controlling my traction. I also find that brake revving hard causes a hesitation once let go, The smooth dropping foot method I have grown to use throws the car quickly and smoothly into the power band and is how I have ran all my bests and get consistent good 60's. I ran 14.5, 9.3 1/8th with just intake and exhaust ,no tune and now my best is 14.3 with tune and that was not with my best 60', would have been a real low 14.3. I have hit 9.2 1/8ths twice now. I do not think my Gen1 is a freak but I have been able to nearly match Gen2 times with similar mods but on 3.31 gears. Had I had the 3.58s of a Gen2 I would have matched if not beaten Gen2 times with same mods.

Yes I run at GLD.

And Rob will agree the throttle cable is likely helping my 60' time, we've discussed it. Hes also run my car, prior to the tune but recognized the throttle response.

That is a real good ET for those heavier rims and tires. I am surprised that you are having those traction problems. Whenever I went to the track and ran N/A I did have some traction issues but nothing to the extent where I worried about it. You should swap your 19's off one day and see what you can do on stockers. Should make for a pretty good ET and once you get your technique down and the track is heated a little you will minimize traction problems.

Driving a different car at the track is a whole new animal. In some ways it is like learning to drive all over again because the car you may be driving now will respond and act totally different then the last car you took down the strip.

Jason got best ET's launching his LS differently than my Gen2. I got my best ET's when I launched while holding the brake and pulling the rpm's up to around 1,800-2,000. I would also shift so that the transmission completed the shifts right at 7,000 rpm's. The last shift I was about to go through the traps so I would hold it out just slightly longer until I was through the traps and then just pop it into D5.

Yep. Even with a tune these TBW cars just don't quite have the throttle response as the Gen1's have.
