I am new to all of this & know very little about cars. I have a '98 Cadillac DeVille Northstar left to me by my father, a '00 LS that I gave to my teen-age daughter, and an '03 LS. I'll start first with the '00 LS that my daughter did not maintain very well. I was told that it was not worth repairing; the timing chain(s) "went bad/broke" I was told by the dealer's mechanic and it would cost close to four thousand dollars to repair. How many timing chains are on the '00 LS (V8) and why is it such a big deal to replace them?

$4k, holy sh!t you could buy a whole new motor for that, wait scratch that, you could buy a whole new 00 LS for that

You can replace everything with the timing assembly for about $1000. You can get a shop to do the labor for about $800-$1000 more, but I did all the labor myself. The most it should cost you should be $2500. That dealership that quoted you $4000 was just trying to tax you because they really don't want to do the job. Good Luck!!
